Luck Leading to Huge US Victory

My first game report, which I'm making because I specifically want comments on my game play.  I was the US on this one, and I can point out several poor choices on my part, which were happily forgiven by good luck.  This was played on WGR w/ optional cards and 1 bonus IP for US player.  I don't know how to contact this opponent directly and didn't ask his permission to post this, so if you are reading this and you want me to take it down, just message me and I will.

TURN 1:

Standard Setup to begin.

4 USSR influence added to Poland, now at 4
1 USSR influence added to East Germany, now at 4
1 USSR influence added to Yugoslavia, now at 1

4 USA influence added to West Germany, now at 4
3 USA influence added to Italy, now at 3
1 USA extra influence added to Iran, now at 2
** Turn 1 Headline Phase **
Soviet Headline Card: #2: Europe Scoring

(I like this play of headlining Europe Scoring on turn 1)

American Headline Card: #26  Ops 1: CIA Created * (USA)

(Amazing headline for the US, so first bit of luck)

USA Headline Event: #26  Ops 1: CIA Created * (USA)

The Americans play the following card as an Event:
  #26  Ops 1: CIA Created * (USA)

** The CIA Created card is permanently removed. **

The American gets to look at the Soviet Hand:  I recall that I saw R S/P, which, as you will see, turned out to be his hold card.

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
  #26  Ops 1: CIA Created * (USA)
1 USA influence added to Afghanistan, now at 1

USSR Headline Event: #2: Europe Scoring

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
  #2: Europe Scoring

*** Scoring in Europe ***
  USSR:  3(presence) +2(battlegrounds)  = 5
  USA:  3(presence) +2(battlegrounds)  = 5
** Turn 1 Action Phase **

Turn 1, USSR action round 1

The Soviets play the following card for a coup attempt:
#16  Ops 3: Warsaw Pact Formed * (USSR)
Coup attempt in Iran (stability 2):
      ** USSR die roll = 4 (+3) = 7
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 3.
American influence in Iran reduced by 2, now at 0
Soviet influence in Iran increased by 1, now at 1
DEFCON Level lowered to 4
Soviet Military Operations for this turn increased to 3

Turn 1, USA action round 1

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
#29  Ops 3: East European Unrest (USA)
3 USA influence added to Pakistan, now at 3

(I really don't know why I did that since I had 2 4ops cards in hand.  Should have coup'ed Iran back, but I got lucky.  Partly, I forgot that he could coup with China for 5ops, since that is so rarely done.  As we see later, forcing him to give up China on Turn 1 could be viewed as genius, but purely accidental at this point)

Turn 1, USSR action round 2

The Soviets play the following card for a coup attempt:
#6  Ops 4: The China Card
Coup attempt in Pakistan (stability 2):
      ** USSR die roll = 1 (+5) = 6
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 2.
American influence in Pakistan reduced by 2, now at 1
DEFCON Level lowered to 3
Soviet Military Operations for this turn increased to 5

Turn 1, USA action round 2

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
#34  Ops 4: Nuclear Test Ban
1 USA influence added to Afghanistan, now at 2
1 USA influence added to Pakistan, now at 2
1 USA influence added to Malaysia, now at 1
1 USA influence added to India, now at 1

(I think that India was an unnecessary waste of 1op since I knew that he had Asia scoring have anticipated his next move.  I probably should have dropped that 1op in Egypt)

Turn 1, USSR action round 3

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
  #1: Asia Scoring

*** Scoring in Asia ***
  USSR:  3(presence) +1(battlegrounds)  = 4
  USA:  3(presence) +1(battlegrounds) +1(adj. to USSR)  = 5
VPs up 1, now at 1

Turn 1, USA action round 3

The Americans play the following card for a coup attempt:
  #23  Ops 4: Marshall Plan * (USA)
Coup attempt in Iran (stability 2):
      ** USA die roll = 1 (+4) = 5
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 1.
Soviet influence in Iran reduced by 1, now at 0
DEFCON Level lowered to 2
American Military Operations for this turn increased to 4

Turn 1, USSR action round 4

The Soviets play the following card to place influence:
#7  Ops 3: Socialist Governments (USSR)
1 USSR influence added to Lebanon, now at 1
2 USSR influence added to Iran, now at 2

Turn 1, USA action round 4
The Americans play the following card for Ops
  #12  Ops 1: Romanian Abdication * (USSR)
They elect to have the Soviet event occur first.

** The Romanian Abdication card is permanently removed. **

Soviet influence in Romania now at 3

The Americans use the Romanian Abdication card to place influence:
1 USA influence added to Egypt, now at 1

(Again, big mistake and another waste of 1op since I know he had Nasser.  If I had used that spare 1op earlier in Egypt, then he would not now be able to throw me out of this area...)

Turn 1, USSR action round 5

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
  #15  Ops 1: Nasser * (USSR)

** The Nasser card is permanently removed. **

Soviet influence in Egypt increased by 2, now at 2
American influence in Egypt reduced by 1, now at 0

Turn 1, USA action round 5
The Americans play the following card for Ops
  #11  Ops 2: Korean War * (USSR)
They elect to have the Soviet event occur first.

** The Korean War card is permanently removed. **

USSR success on a modified die roll of 4-6;  USA modifer is -0
  ** Die roll: 5 -- USSR victory!
VPs down 2, now at -1
American influence in South Korea reduced by 1, now at 0
Soviet influence in South Korea increased by 1, now at 1

The Americans use the Korean War card to place influence:
2 USA influence added to South Korea, now at 2

Turn 1, USSR action round 6

The Soviets play the following card to place influence:
#110  Ops 2: The Cambridge Five (USSR)
2 USSR influence added to South Korea, now at 3

Turn 1, USA action round 6
The Americans play the following card for Ops
#17  Ops 3: De Gaulle Leads France * (USSR)
They elect to have the Soviet event occur first.

** The De Gaulle Leads France card is permanently removed. **

American influence in France reduced by 0, now at 0
Soviet influence in France increased by 1, now at 1
France is not affected by NATO for the rest of the game.

The Americans use the De Gaulle Leads France card to place influence:
3 USA influence added to France, now at 3

(I am basically abandoning the ME here, which I think is fine.  My plan at this point is to lock down Europe and Asia by the end of Turn 2 and then move on.  My hold card was Decol, and I felt lucky that I drew it on Turn 1.)

DEFCON Level raised to 3

Here is the map at the end of Turn 1:

I don't think CIA is bad headline (some think US should keep it in the deck at all costs). But if I could also headline Marshall Plan CIA would be not an option. Marshall was a quite good headline before optionals. Optionals made it hugely better as it can help NATO happen faster. But ok CIA gets you to hold into iron triangle & marshall is good OPs.

At the end of the turn since Arab Israel & Suez Crisis are in the deck, I would have solidated ME presence even before France.

Onto Turn 2:

** Turn 2 Headline Phase **
Soviet Headline Card: #28  Ops 3: Suez Crisis * (USSR)
American Headline Card: #102  Ops 2: Defectors (USA)
The Defectors card cancels out the Soviet-played Headline Event.

(I was thrilled to see Defectors, since I knew he was holding R S/P.  Notably, I have ME Scoring and Asia was just scored.)

** Turn 2 Action Phase **

Turn 2, USSR action round 1

The Soviets play the following card for a coup attempt:
  #32  Ops 1: UN Intervention
Coup attempt in Panama (stability 2):
      ** USSR die roll = 2 (+1) = 3
The modified roll does not exceed the doubled stability -- no effect.
DEFCON Level lowered to 2
Soviet Military Operations for this turn increased to 1

Turn 2, USA action round 1

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
  #27  Ops 4: US/Japan Mutual Defense Pact * (USA)
1 USA influence added to France, now at 4
1 USA influence added to Egypt, now at 1
1 USA influence added to South Korea, now at 3

(Goal here was to simultaneously create a crisis in Korea and the ME)

Turn 2, USSR action round 2

The Soviets play the following card to place influence:
  #14  Ops 3: Comecon * (USSR)
2 USSR influence added to Libya, now at 2
1 USSR influence added to Egypt, now at 3

Turn 2, USA action round 2
The Americans play the following card for Ops
  #8  Ops 2: Fidel * (USSR)
They elect to have the Soviet event occur first.

** The Fidel card is permanently removed. **

Soviet influence in Cuba now at 3

The Americans use the Fidel card to place influence:
2 USA influence added to Jordan, now at 2

Here is the map at this point:

I think it was actually a mistake to put both Ops into Jordan.  Could have been fine with just dropping one there to make him choose between Iraq and Saudi Arabia, and use the other Op in S Korea.

Turn 2, USSR action round 3
The Soviets play the following card for Ops
#105  Ops 2: Special Relationship (USA)
They elect to have the American event occur first.
American influence in France increased by 1, now at 5

The Soviets use the Special Relationship card to place influence:
2 USSR influence added to Saudi Arabia, now at 2

Turn 2, USA action round 3

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
  #21  Ops 4: NATO * (USA)
4 USA influence added to Iraq, now at 4

Turn 2, USSR action round 4
The Soviets play the following card for Ops
  #106  Ops 3: NORAD * (USA)
They elect to have the American event occur first.

** The NORAD card is permanently removed. **

The Soviets use the NORAD card to place influence:
3 USSR influence added to South Korea, now at 6

(So I did get to grab Iraq, but he gets to take S. Korea.  At least I made him activate NORAD, which he wouldn't have had to do if not for using China on Turn 1)

Turn 2, USA action round 4

The Americans play the following card as an Event:
  #3: Middle East Scoring

*** Scoring in Middle East ***
  USSR:  5(domination) +3(battlegrounds)  = 8
  USA:  3(presence) +1(battlegrounds)  = 4
VPs down 4, now at -5

Turn 2, USSR action round 5
The Soviets play the following card for Ops
  #22  Ops 2: Independent Reds * (USA)
They elect to have the American event occur first.

** The Independent Reds card is permanently removed. **

American influence in Romania now at 3

The Soviets use the Independent Reds card to place influence:
1 USSR influence added to Pakistan, now at 1

Turn 2, USA action round 5

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
#6  Ops 4: The China Card
2 USA influence added to Pakistan, now at 4
2 USA influence added to India, now at 3
1 USA influence added to Thailand, now at 1

(It was always my plan to play China on this turn, and now was as good a time as any.  I need to hold 2 cards, which are Decol and Destal - lucky I drew Destal on Turn 2)

Turn 2, USSR action round 6
The Soviets play the following card for Ops
  #25  Ops 3: Containment * (USA)
They elect to have the American event occur first.

** The Containment card is permanently removed. **

All further operations cards played by US this turn add one to their value (to a maximum of 4).

The Soviets use the Containment card to place influence:
2 USSR influence added to India, now at 2

Turn 2, USA action round 6
The Americans play the following card for Ops
  #13  Ops 2: Arab-Israeli War (USSR)
They elect to have the Soviet event occur first.
USSR success on a modified die roll of 4-6;  USA modifer is -1
  ** Die roll: 4 (-1) = 3 -- no effect **
Soviet Military Operations for this turn increased to 3

(Ahh, so THAT is why I wasted that 1op to control Jordan...)

The Americans use the Arab-Israeli War card to place influence:
2 USA influence added to India, now at 5
1 USA influence added to Thailand, now at 2
The Americans are 2 military operations short of the DEFCON requirement of 2
VPs down 2, now at -7
DEFCON Level raised to 3

Here is the map:

All in all, I'm pretty happy even though the score is -7.  I have Domination in Europe and Asia and I am holding both Decol and Destal to Turn 3 and keeping them out of the shuffle.  I also know that he is still holding R S/P, which I expect to be his next headline.  Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to control Canada, so I won't get to use NORAD next turn.

Fair point.  Normally I would never play CIA for the event, but several people on this forum posted about how great it is as a turn 1 headline, since it gets you into western Asia.  This was actually my first time doing it.  I think I would normally prefer CIA in this spot since using Marshall Plan for ops on turn 1 means that it could come back as early as turn 3.  But this is my one shot to use CIA to break into western Asia.

Agree with Riku that on turn 1, getting somewhere in the Middle East is more important than France since Europe Scoring is gone and Middle East Scoring is still lurking.  A Soviet ME Scoring headline would hurt just as much as Suez Crisis if you hadn't drawn Defectors (by no means guaranteed), although I suppose you only had an inefficient control of Jordan to grab presence at that point.  Still, 1 point in Jordan lets you threaten to take Saudi Arabia in response to an AR1 coup, or 2 points-for-1 in Egypt allows you to collect Libya in response to the obligatory coup and sets you up for Sadat later.

I do not understand why the Soviet player blew UN Intervention on a worthless coup.  He could have used it to stop NORAD from going into effect; a 1 op coup is unlikely to do much to a 2 stability country; and he's likely losing a VP since he isn't getting to 2 mil ops with that puny a coup.  (I mean, he did anyway thanks to Arab-Israeli, but that was not guaranteed.)  Whatever his hold card was, it couldn't have been THAT bad.

Not a huge fan of the belated play into Egypt on AR1; now the Soviet player is guaranteed to have a tempo to react, unlike AR6.  Might have wanted to slow-roll that, maybe save high ops cards and hope the USSR player ran low before such a move.  Sure there are multiple crises but he gets to pick which one is most important to him to "win" on.  If you wanted to threaten to pick up a ME battleground, Jordan is cheaper, so I'd have done 1 France / 1 Jordan / 2 South Korea on AR1.

Well, I knew at the time that he had R S/P, so he used UN for ops so he could hold that card.  But yeah, not sure why he decided to coup with UN.  I think he wanted to lose the coup so CIA would not lose him the game, but that do didnt matter since Fidel came out.

I think that the reason for couping with UN might have been that he wasn´t so much interested in the result of the coup as in denying the option to the US to do it. Maybe he had no use for the UN event (because of a tricky hold card) and thus he decided to use the card with less ops for the coup. I've done that myself once or twice.

Onto Turn 3:

************************************************************
**              The  deck is being shuffled.              **
************************************************************
** Turn 3 Headline Phase **
Soviet Headline Card: #31  Ops 4: Red Scare/Purge
American Headline Card: #102  Ops 2: Defectors (USA)
The Defectors card cancels out the Soviet-played Headline Event.

(I knew he would headline R S/P, which he was holding since Turn 1.  Luckily, I drew Defectors again)

** Turn 3 Action Phase **

Turn 3, USSR action round 1

The Soviets play the following card for a coup attempt:
  #20  Ops 2: Olympic Games
Coup attempt in Panama (stability 2):
      ** USSR die roll = 4 (+2) = 6
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 2.
American influence in Panama reduced by 1, now at 0
Soviet influence in Panama increased by 1, now at 1
DEFCON Level lowered to 2
Soviet Military Operations for this turn increased to 2

Turn 3, USA action round 1

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
#5  Ops 3: Five Year Plan (USA)
2 USA influence added to Burma, now at 2
1 USA influence added to Algeria, now at 1

(Did this to cut him off from expanding into SE Asia on the cheap, and preparing for Africa Scoring.  But in hindsight I think I should have taken Algeria outright, maybe even over-controlled it?)

Turn 3, USSR action round 2
The Soviets play the following card for Ops
  #27  Ops 4: US/Japan Mutual Defense Pact * (USA)
They elect to have the American event occur first.

** The US/Japan Mutual Defense Pact card is permanently removed. **

USSR may no longer make Coup or Realignment rolls against Japan
American influence in Japan increased by 3, now at 4

The Soviets use the US/Japan Mutual Defense Pact card to place influence:
3 USSR influence added to Algeria, now at 3
1 USSR influence added to Saudi Arabia, now at 3

Turn 3, USA action round 2

The Americans play the following card to place influence:

  #3: Middle East Scoring

*** Scoring in Middle East ***
  USSR:  5(domination) +4(battlegrounds)  = 9
  USA:  3(presence) +1(battlegrounds)  = 4
VPs down 5, now at -12

(Luckily, he got to score ME twice, but there is nothing that I could have done to prevent his Domination)

Turn 3, USA action round 3
The Americans play the following card for Ops
  #14  Ops 3: Comecon * (USSR)
They elect to have the Soviet event occur first.

** The Comecon card is permanently removed. **

Soviet influence in East Germany increased by 1, now at 5
Soviet influence in Poland increased by 1, now at 5
Soviet influence in Czechoslovakia increased by 1, now at 1
Soviet influence in Bulgaria increased by 1, now at 1

The Americans use the Comecon card to place influence:
2 USA influence added to Greece, now at 2
1 USA influence added to Zaire, now at 1

Here is the map in the middle of Turn 3:

Turn 3, USSR action round 4

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
  #18  Ops 1: Captured Nazi Scientist *

** The Captured Nazi Scientist card is permanently removed. **

USSR progress on the Space Race Track is now at Earth Satellite
VPs down 2, now at -14

Turn 3, USA action round 4
The Americans play the following card for Ops
  #10  Ops 1: Blockade * (USSR)
They elect to have the Soviet event occur first.

** The Blockade card is permanently removed. **

The US player discards the following card to avoid losing all Influence in West Germany:
  #33  Ops 3: De-Stalinization * (USSR)

(I was fortunate enough to be able to hold both DeStal and Decol to Turn 3.  I get rid of Blockade and DeStal in one shot and get the secure Canada.  Later this turn I get to space Decol)

The Americans use the Blockade card to place influence:
1 USA influence added to Canada, now at 4

Turn 3, USSR action round 5

The Soviets play the following card for an attempt on the Space Race track:
#4  Ops 3: Duck and Cover (USA)
    ** Space Race Die Roll (1-4 needed): = 3 **
USSR progress on the Space Race Track is now at Animal in Space
The Soviets may now make two space race attempts per turn

Turn 3, USA action round 5

The Americans play the following card for an attempt on the Space Race track:
  #30  Ops 2: Decolonization (USSR)
    ** Space Race Die Roll (1-3 needed): = 3 **
USA progress on the Space Race Track is now at Earth Satellite
VPs up 1, now at -13

Turn 3, USSR action round 6

The Soviets play the following card to place influence:
  #24  Ops 2: Indo-Pakistani War
2 USSR influence added to Panama, now at 3

Turn 3, USA action round 6
The Americans play the following card for Ops
  #9  Ops 2: Vietnam Revolts * (USSR)
They elect to have the Soviet event occur first.

** The Vietnam Revolts card is permanently removed. **

Soviet influence in Vietnam increased by 2, now at 2

The Americans use the Vietnam Revolts card to place influence:
1 USA influence added to Laos/Cambodia, now at 1
1 USA influence added to Thailand, now at 3
The Americans are 2 military operations short of the DEFCON requirement of 2
VPs down 2, now at -15
** The Mid War cards are added to the deck **
************************************************************
**              The  deck is being shuffled.              **
************************************************************
DEFCON Level raised to 3

Map at end of Turn 3:

The score here is terrible for the US at -15VP.  I have a real chance of losing in the next turn or two.  However, the scoring cards that are due to come out are going to help me a lot:  Africa will probably go my way.  I got SE Asia locked down.  And Europe and Asia are both getting scored again at some point, where I have domination.  The Americas are very worrisome...

The Soviet player waited too darn long on actually using his Red Scare.  A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.  Sure, Red Scare is best as a headline, but if it's not convenient to use it or you have a headline you need more, it's still got a big "4" in the corner.  Investing those 4 ops nownownow on turn 1-2 when the board is still up for grabs is worth more than potential gains later from holding it.  I guess if I had an excellent headline on turn 6, drew RS/P, did not have an ops light hand, and Quagmire / Bear Trap was still in the deck and guaranteed to be drawn next turn, go ahead and hold it in hopes of getting that haxy combo off, but otherwise?  I want the 4 ops, and I certainly don't want to set up NORAD for free when I have UN Intervention anyway.

Onto Turn 4:

** Turn 4 Headline Phase **
Soviet Headline Card: #54  Ops 1: Allende * (USSR)
American Headline Card: #44  Ops 3: Bear Trap * (USA)

USA Headline Event: #44  Ops 3: Bear Trap * (USA)

The Americans use the Bear Trap card as an Event:

** The Bear Trap card is permanently removed. **

On the next action round, USSR player must discard an Operations card worth
2 or more and roll less than 5.  Repeat each USSR player phase until successful
or no appropriate cards remain.  If out of appropriate cards, the USSR Player may
only play scoring cards until the next turn.

USSR Headline Event: #54  Ops 1: Allende * (USSR)

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
  #54  Ops 1: Allende * (USSR)

** The Allende card is permanently removed. **

Soviet influence in Chile increased by 2, now at 2

(He chose a good HL to get into the currently open S America.  But lucky for me I could HL Bear Trap and steal the opening coup)

** Turn 4 Action Phase **

Turn 4, USSR action round 1
The USSR discards the following card because of Bear Trap:
#76  Ops 3: Ussuri River Skirmish * (USA)
Bear Trap ends on a die roll of 1-4: ** Die Roll = 4 -- The Bear Trap is over!

(Unfortunately he gets to dump one of my great cards, but he would have spaced it anyway.  At least it's still in the deck for the late war)

Turn 4, USA action round 1

The Americans play the following card for a coup attempt:
  #21  Ops 4: NATO * (USA)
Coup attempt in Algeria (stability 2):
      ** USA die roll = 5 (+4) = 9
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 5.
Soviet influence in Algeria reduced by 3, now at 0
American influence in Algeria increased by 2, now at 3
DEFCON Level lowered to 2
American Military Operations for this turn increased to 4
*** NORAD -- the US may place 1 influence anywhere they already have influence ***
American influence in Egypt increased by 1, now at 2

(Great result, which halts the spread of Communism into Africa.  Chose Egypt for the NORAD point to try to goad him into putting points there knowing that Sadat was coming eventually...)

Turn 4, USSR action round 2
The Soviets play the following card for Ops
#73  Ops 3: Shuttle Diplomacy (USA)
They elect to have the American event occur first.
Play in front of US player.  During the next scoring of the Middle East or Asia
(whichever comes first), subtract one Battleground country from USSR total,
then put this card in the discard pile.

The Soviets use the Shuttle Diplomacy card to place influence:
1 USSR influence added to Chile, now at 3
2 USSR influence added to Argentina, now at 2

(Smart use of the card since Asia is lost to USSR and it will definitely get scored before ME does)

Turn 4, USA action round 2

The Americans play the following card as an Event:
#64  Ops 1: Panama Canal Returned * (USA)

** The Panama Canal Returned card is permanently removed. **

American influence in Panama increased by 1, now at 1
American influence in Costa Rica increased by 1, now at 1
American influence in Venezuela increased by 1, now at 1

Turn 4, USSR action round 3
The Soviets play the following card for Ops
  #23  Ops 4: Marshall Plan * (USA)
They elect to have the American event occur first.

** The Marshall Plan card is permanently removed. **

American influence in United Kingdom increased by 1, now at 6
American influence in Benelux increased by 1, now at 1
American influence in West Germany increased by 1, now at 5
American influence in France increased by 1, now at 6
American influence in Spain/Portugal increased by 1, now at 1
American influence in Italy increased by 1, now at 4
American influence in Turkey increased by 1, now at 1

The Soviets use the Marshall Plan card to place influence:
1 USSR influence added to Colombia, now at 1
3 USSR influence added to Uruguay, now at 3

(American domination in Europe is now practically set in stone, but we need to deal with S America)

Turn 4, USA action round 3
The Americans play the following card for Ops
#16  Ops 3: Warsaw Pact Formed * (USSR)
They elect to have the Soviet event occur first.

** The Warsaw Pact Formed card is permanently removed. **

2 USSR influence added to Poland, now at 7
2 USSR influence added to Czechoslovakia, now at 3
1 USSR influence added to East Germany, now at 6

The Americans use the Warsaw Pact Formed card to place influence:
1 USA influence added to Venezuela, now at 2
2 USA influence added to Brazil, now at 2

Turn 4, USSR action round 4

The Soviets play the following card to place influence:
#6  Ops 4: The China Card
3 USSR influence added to Venezuela, now at 3

(Not sure why he is trying to muscle his way into Venezuela.  He clearly does not have the ops to do it.  I use a 4ops card to stop him and also to start dropping ops in SE Asia since I have SE Asia Scoring, which will save me from defeat)

Turn 4, USA action round 4
The Americans play the following card for Ops
  #59  Ops 4: Flower Power * (USSR)
They elect to have the Soviet event occur first.

** The Flower Power card is permanently removed. **

USSR gains 2 VP for every subsequently US played 'War' Event Card
(Arab-Israeli War, Korean War, Brush War, Indo- Pakistani War or Iran- Iraq War), unless
the card is played on the Space Race, or the war made unplayable by a subsequent card.
This event cancelled by 'An Evil Empire'.

The Americans use the Flower Power card to place influence:
3 USA influence added to Venezuela, now at 5
1 USA influence added to Malaysia, now at 2

Here is the map in the middle of Turn 4:

Turn 4, USSR action round 5

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
  #13  Ops 2: Arab-Israeli War (USSR)
USSR success on a modified die roll of 4-6;  USA modifer is -1
  ** Die roll: 6 (-1) = 5 -- USSR victory!
VPs down 2, now at -17
American influence in Israel reduced by 1, now at 0
Soviet influence in Israel increased by 1, now at 1
Soviet Military Operations for this turn increased to 2

(Now things are getting critical, so I need to score SE Asia quickly.  I can't do it now since I'll need the last two countries)

Turn 4, USA action round 5

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
#105  Ops 2: Special Relationship (USA)
1 USA influence added to Philippines, now at 2
1 USA influence added to Indonesia, now at 1

Turn 4, USSR action round 6

The Soviets play the following card to place influence:
  #45  Ops 1: Summit
1 USSR influence added to Egypt, now at 4

(at least he took my bait from before.  No sense in wasting ops in Egypt)

Turn 4, USA action round 6

The Americans play the following card as an Event:
  #38: Southeast Asia Scoring *

** The Southeast Asia Scoring card is permanently removed. **

*** Scoring in Southeast Asia ***
  USSR: 1(Vietnam) = 1
  USA: 1(Burma) +1(Laos/Cambodia) +2(Thailand) +1(Philippines) +1(Malaysia) +1(Indonesia) = 7
VPs up 6, now at -11

Turn 4, USSR action round 7
The Soviets play the following card for Ops
  #19  Ops 1: Truman Doctrine * (USA)
They elect to have the American event occur first.

** The Truman Doctrine card is permanently removed. **

Soviet influence in Romania now at 0

(I'm glad that I was at least able to use Truman in a meaningful way.  Between Romanian Abdication, Independent Reds, and Truman, I get a 3-stability country, adjacent to the USSR, completely for free)

The Soviets use the Truman Doctrine card for realignment rolls:

Realignment roll in Brazil: USSR modifier = +1, USA modifier = +2
      ** USSR die roll = 1 (+1) = 2
      ** USA die roll = 4 (+2) = 6

Turn 4, USA action round 7

The Americans play the following card as an Event:
#65  Ops 2: Camp David Accords * (USA)

** The Camp David Accords card is permanently removed. **

American influence in Israel increased by 1, now at 1
American influence in Jordan increased by 1, now at 3
American influence in Egypt increased by 1, now at 3
VPs up 1, now at -10

(Just the 1VP at this point was worth the trade for the 1op, but I like getting those extra IP's in the region to set myself up for the late war)

DEFCON Level raised to 3

Here is the map:

Still not a great spot at -10VP, but not at the brink of loss anymore.  ME scoring is out until the late war.  Europe and Asia will be scored by turn 7 and I have a solid domination in those areas.  Africa is going my way for now.  S America is probably going to get scored at a stalemate.  Hopefully C America does, too.  So unless there is a huge swing, the game is definitely going to the late war.

Onto Turn 5:

** Turn 5 Headline Phase **
Soviet Headline Card: #7  Ops 3: Socialist Governments (USSR)
American Headline Card: #49  Ops 2: Missile Envy

(I was holding this from last hand.  I love Missile Envy as a headline, especially for the US.  At this point in the game, I feel that the US player is usually going to be very happy with he gets - a high ops USSR event that you can use to coup in the headline phase w/o triggering the event, or one of the 3ops neutral events that you probably are fine with triggering.  I don't get to use NORAD since I coup in the headline, but he's taking influence from Canada with Socialist Governments, anyway)

USSR Headline Event: #7  Ops 3: Socialist Governments (USSR)

The Soviets use the Socialist Governments card as an Event:
American influence in Canada reduced by 1, now at 3
American influence in West Germany reduced by 2, now at 3

USA Headline Event: #49  Ops 2: Missile Envy

The Americans play the following card as an Event:
  #49  Ops 2: Missile Envy
The Soviet exchanges the following card for the Missile Envy:
#56  Ops 4: Muslim Revolution (USSR)

(Lucky that I drew that one.  An incredibly great card to draw with Missile Envy.  My only two choices are to coup Argentina or Panama.  I pick Argentina knowing he can respond with realignments because I'm hoping that he fails the 2 realignments he can do with Missile Envy, and then I can cause havoc in the whole sub-region.  Worst case, he realigns me out and then spends more ops to take it back.)

The Americans play the following card for a coup attempt:
#56  Ops 4: Muslim Revolution (USSR)
Coup attempt in Argentina (stability 2):
      ** USA die roll = 5 (+4) = 9
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 5.
Soviet influence in Argentina reduced by 2, now at 0
American influence in Argentina increased by 3, now at 3
DEFCON Level lowered to 2
American Military Operations for this turn increased to 4
** Turn 5 Action Phase **

Turn 5, USSR action round 1

The Soviets play the following card for realignment rolls:
  #49  Ops 2: Missile Envy

Realignment roll in Argentina: USSR modifier = +2, USA modifier = +1
      ** USSR die roll = 2 (+2) = 4
      ** USA die roll = 1 (+1) = 2
American influence in Argentina reduced by 2, now at 1

Realignment roll in Argentina: USSR modifier = +2, USA modifier = +1
      ** USSR die roll = 6 (+2) = 8
      ** USA die roll = 5 (+1) = 6
American influence in Argentina reduced by 1, now at 0

(Oh well...)

Turn 5, USA action round 1

The Americans play the following card for a coup attempt:
#34  Ops 4: Nuclear Test Ban
Coup attempt in Uruguay (stability 2):
      ** USA die roll = 2 (+4) = 6
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 2.
Soviet influence in Uruguay reduced by 2, now at 1
American Military Operations for this turn increased to 5

(That was a gamble that did not pay off.  I have a lot of ops in this hand and not much to do with them, so I figured I would take this gamble)

Turn 5, USSR action round 2
The Soviets play the following card for Ops
#71  Ops 2: Nixon Plays the China Card * (USA)
They elect to have the American event occur first.

** The Nixon Plays the China Card card is permanently removed. **

VPs up 2, now at -8

(I like getting the 2VP, but it's too bad that he played this card at this point in the turn.  I was always planning to play China and then Cultural Revolution)

The Soviets use the Nixon Plays the China Card card to place influence:
1 USSR influence added to Uruguay, now at 2
1 USSR influence added to Argentina, now at 1

Turn 5, USA action round 2

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
  #112  Ops 3: Che (USSR)
1 USA influence added to West Germany, now at 4
1 USA influence added to Canada, now at 4
1 USA influence added to Mexico, now at 1
The Soviets use the USSR event played by the USA
Coup attempt in Costa Rica (stability 3):
      ** USSR die roll = 6 (+3) = 9
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 3.
American influence in Costa Rica reduced by 1, now at 0
Soviet influence in Costa Rica increased by 2, now at 2
Soviet Military Operations for this turn increased to 3
The coup is successful: the USSR may make another coup

(This was a little blunder and he luckily rolled well.  I could have taken Costa Rica and then played Che now or next round so that he wouldn't have any real targets for Che)

Turn 5, USSR action round 3

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
#53  Ops 2: South African Unrest (USSR)
Soviet influence in Angola increased by 2, now at 2
Soviet influence in South Africa increased by 1, now at 1

Turn 5, USA action round 3

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
#29  Ops 3: East European Unrest (USA)
1 USA influence added to Zaire, now at 2
2 USA influence added to South Africa, now at 3

(I could have taken back Angola with the 3ops, but he could have done the same in response.  Instead I overcontrol Zaire so he can't flip it and put the rest into South Africa so I can control it soon.  I would rather take the conservative approach and get the easy domination than go on an ops war to maybe get control)

Turn 5, USSR action round 4

The Soviets play the following card for an attempt on the Space Race track:
#67  Ops 2: Grain Sales to Soviets (USA)
    ** Space Race Die Roll (1-3 needed): = 2 **
USSR progress on the Space Race Track is now at Lunar Probe
VPs down 2, now at -10

Turn 5, USA action round 4

The Americans play the following card as an Event:
#63  Ops 2: Colonial Rear Guards (USA)
American influence in Morocco increased by 1, now at 1
American influence in Nigeria increased by 1, now at 1
American influence in Angola increased by 1, now at 2
American influence in South Africa increased by 1, now at 4

Here is the map at this point:

Colonial Rear Guards was a great event for this spot.  I saved it for this point and now simultaneously take the previously inaccessible Nigeria, South Africa, threaten Angola, and start adding influence to Morocco in case I need it for domination)

Turn 5, USSR action round 5

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
  #2: Europe Scoring

(He has no way of contesting this and just has to suck it up.  Not sure why he played it now, since I can now take Angola for Africa control)

*** Scoring in Europe ***
  USSR:  3(presence) +2(battlegrounds)  = 5
  USA:  7(domination) +3(battlegrounds) +1(adj. to USSR)  = 11
VPs up 6, now at -4

Turn 5, USA action round 5

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
#6  Ops 4: The China Card
2 USA influence added to Angola, now at 4
1 USA influence added to Mexico, now at 2
1 USA influence added to Morocco, now at 2

Turn 5, USSR action round 6

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
  #47  Ops 2: Junta
Soviet influence in Mexico increased by 2, now at 2

The Soviets play the following card for realignment rolls:
  #47  Ops 2: Junta

Realignment roll in Panama: USSR modifier = +2, USA modifier = +0
      ** USSR die roll = 6 (+2) = 8
      ** USA die roll = 4 (+0) = 4
American influence in Panama reduced by 1, now at 0

Realignment roll in Brazil: USSR modifier = +1, USA modifier = +2
      ** USSR die roll = 2 (+1) = 3
      ** USA die roll = 2 (+2) = 4

Turn 5, USA action round 6

The Americans play the following card for an attempt on the Space Race track:
  #61  Ops 3: OPEC (USSR)
    ** Space Race Die Roll (1-4 needed): = 4 **
USA progress on the Space Race Track is now at Animal in Space
The Soviets may no longer make two space race attempts per turn

(I think I just completely forgot that he put the two IP's in Mexico; obviously a mistake.  At least he can't space two cards anymore)

Turn 5, USSR action round 7
The Soviets play the following card for Ops
#77  Ops 3: 'Ask Not What Your Country Can Do for You... * (USA)
They elect to have the American event occur first.

** The 'Ask Not What Your Country Can Do for You... card is permanently removed. **

The American player discards the following card to be replaced:
        #58  Ops 3: Cultural Revolution * (USSR)

(Trust me when I tell you that this was the only card that was worth exchanging, and I actually considered keeping it.  But luckily, I draw ABM Treaty!)

The Soviets use the 'Ask Not What Your Country Can Do for You... card to place influence:
3 USSR influence added to Mexico, now at 5

Turn 5, USA action round 7
DEFCON Level raised to 3

The Americans play the following card for a coup attempt:
  #57  Ops 4: ABM Treaty
Coup attempt in Argentina (stability 2):
      ** USA die roll = 3 (+4) = 7
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 3.
Soviet influence in Argentina reduced by 1, now at 0
American influence in Argentina increased by 2, now at 2
DEFCON Level lowered to 2
*** NORAD -- the US may place 1 influence anywhere they already have influence ***
American influence in Mexico increased by 1, now at 3
DEFCON Level raised to 3

Here is the map:

VP is at -4 and I am liking how the map is shaping.  In the next two turns, Asia, Africa, and both S and C America will get scored.  I have Africa control now, but worst case I will almost certainly have at least domination.  I created a problem for him in S America and he will probably have to deal with Argentina on AR1 or coup in Africa.  My NORAD point will allow me to take back Mexico, so C America, while dire at the moment, isn't so much of a concern unless he headlines the scoring card, which he should do if he draws it.  ME isn't getting scored until after turn 7, and it could easily be a -1 or 0 score once Sadat expels the Soviets.

** Turn 6 Headline Phase **
Soviet Headline Card: #75  Ops 2: Liberation Theology (USSR)
American Headline Card: #74  Ops 2: The Voice of America (USA)

(Very good headlines for both sides.  I was very disappointed to see this since his card will negate most of my card as I am using my card solely in C America.  I would have used it in S America as well, but not after seeing his headline)

USA Headline Event: #74  Ops 2: The Voice of America (USA)

The Americans play the following card as an Event:
#74  Ops 2: The Voice of America (USA)
Soviet influence in Mexico reduced by 2, now at 3
Soviet influence in Cuba reduced by 2, now at 1

USSR Headline Event: #75  Ops 2: Liberation Theology (USSR)

The Soviets use the Liberation Theology card as an Event:
2 USSR influence added to Cuba, now at 3
1 USSR influence added to Mexico, now at 4
** Turn 6 Action Phase **

Turn 6, USSR action round 1

The Soviets play the following card for a coup attempt:
  #28  Ops 3: Suez Crisis * (USSR)
Coup attempt in Mexico (stability 2):
      ** USSR die roll = 2 (+3) = 5
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 1.
American influence in Mexico reduced by 1, now at 2
DEFCON Level lowered to 2
Soviet Military Operations for this turn increased to 3
*** NORAD -- the US may place 1 influence anywhere they already have influence ***
American influence in Mexico increased by 1, now at 3

(I was lucky that he only rolled a 2.  But I think that his choice to coup Mexico was a mistake.  He probably assumes that I have the scoring card, but I'm still able to contest the region no matter what.  I probably would have settled for domination in C America and broken control in Africa)

Turn 6, USA action round 1

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
  #60  Ops 3: U-2 Incident * (USSR)
3 USA influence added to Mexico, now at 6
The Soviets use the USSR event played by the USA

** The U-2 Incident card is permanently removed. **

VPs down 1, now at -5
If UN intervention played later this turn as an Event, Soviets gain an additional 1 VP.

(Unfortunately, I'm going to lose 2VP on this card, but I needed to take Mexico and I have no other 3op cards, and I really want to use my UN Intervention to get rid of Lone Gunman)

Turn 6, USSR action round 2

The Soviets play the following card for realignment rolls:
#110  Ops 2: The Cambridge Five (USSR)

Realignment roll in Argentina: USSR modifier = +2, USA modifier = +1
      ** USSR die roll = 3 (+2) = 5
      ** USA die roll = 3 (+1) = 4
American influence in Argentina reduced by 1, now at 1

Realignment roll in Argentina: USSR modifier = +2, USA modifier = +1
      ** USSR die roll = 3 (+2) = 5
      ** USA die roll = 2 (+1) = 3
American influence in Argentina reduced by 1, now at 0

(He probably made the right call doing the realignment now.  But since Costa Rica is not yet controlled, I get to score C America before he has domination.  That's why if I'm looking at a possible control I always try to snag at least one, stable non-BG just in case I lose 1 BG - like I will do in Africa later this turn)

Turn 6, USA action round 2

The Americans play the following card as an Event:
  #37: Central America Scoring

*** Scoring in Central America ***
  USSR:  1(presence) +2(battlegrounds) +1(adj. to USA)  = 4
  USA:  1(presence) +1(battlegrounds)  = 2
VPs down 2, now at -7

(Last turn he probably thought that he was going to score control)

Turn 6, USSR action round 3

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
  #39  Ops 3: Arms Race
VPs down 3, now at -10

Turn 6, USA action round 3

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
#46  Ops 2: How I Learned to Stop Worrying *
1 USA influence added to Morocco, now at 3
1 USA influence added to Angola, now at 5

(Over-controlling these 1-stability BG's not only prevents the opponent from flipping it with a 3ops card, but in Angola it also defends against the next card)

Turn 6, USSR action round 4

The Soviets play the following card to place influence:
#52  Ops 2: Portuguese Empire Crumbles * (USSR)
2 USSR influence added to Argentina, now at 2

(I think he probably should have used it for the event anyway since I have no way of getting to Argentina at this point and he doesn't even have presence in Africa)

Turn 6, USA action round 4
The Americans play the following card for Ops
  #55  Ops 2: Willy Brandt * (USSR)
They elect to have the Soviet event occur first.

** The Willy Brandt card is permanently removed. **

Soviet influence in West Germany increased by 1, now at 1
VPs down 1, now at -11

The Americans use the Willy Brandt card to place influence:
1 USA influence added to West Germany, now at 5
1 USA influence added to Spain/Portugal, now at 2

Here is the map at this point:

Turn 6, USSR action round 5

The Soviets play the following card for an attempt on the Space Race track:
  #66  Ops 2: Puppet Governments * (USA)
    ** Space Race Die Roll (1-4 needed): = 5 **
      No effect.

Turn 6, USA action round 5

The Americans play the following card for an attempt on the Space Race track:
#50  Ops 4: 'We Will Bury You' * (USSR)
    ** Space Race Die Roll (1-3 needed): = 6 **
      No effect.

Turn 6, USSR action round 6
The Soviets play the following card for Ops
#72  Ops 1: Sadat Expels Soviets * (USA)
They elect to have the American event occur first.

** The Sadat Expels Soviets card is permanently removed. **

Soviet influence in Egypt now at 0
American influence in Egypt increased by 1, now at 4

(I was waiting for that card.  Now I get a BG that he pretty much can never successfully coup)

The Soviets use the Sadat Expels Soviets card to place influence:
1 USSR influence added to Costa Rica, now at 3

Turn 6, USA action round 6
The Americans play the following card for Ops:
  #62  Ops 1: 'Lone Gunman' * (USSR)
They also play UN Intervention to cancel the Soviet event

The Americans play the following card for realignment rolls:
  #62  Ops 1: 'Lone Gunman' * (USSR)

Realignment roll in Cuba: USA modifier = +1, USSR modifier = +1
      ** USA die roll = 4 (+1) = 5
      ** USSR die roll = 4 (+1) = 5
    No effect.
** U2 Incident -- VPs down 1, now at -12

(That was a wasteful mistake.  I should have couped Columbia to get the mil op and to force him to coup back and waste a round)

Turn 6, USSR action round 7

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
  #1: Asia Scoring

*** Scoring in Asia ***
(-1 to Russian battleground total due to Shuttle Diplomacy)
  USSR:  3(presence) +1(battlegrounds)  = 4
  USA:  7(domination) +4(battlegrounds) +1(adj. to USSR)  = 12
VPs up 8, now at -4

(And as it turned out, he couldn't even coup me back in Columbia had I done it on my last round)

Turn 6, USA action round 7

The Americans play the following card as an Event:
  #70  Ops 1: OAS Founded * (USA)

** The OAS Founded card is permanently removed. **

2 USA influence added to Chile, now at 2
The Americans are 2 military operations short of the DEFCON requirement of 2
VPs down 2, now at -6
DEFCON Level raised to 3

Here is the map:

VP is -6, but Africa is getting scored next turn.  I will score well in Africa and get the VP's in the positive.  Not sure why he basically abandoned Africa in order to contest the Americas.  And due to the OAS influence going into Chile, I can take it from him in response to his AR1 coup, which will likely be in Africa.

Interesting recap.

I think the Soviet player not triggering the Portuguese Empire event makes sense.  If he just wants presence in Africa, he can take Tunisia or Botswana and get something more stable than SE African States.  If he actually did play the event, then you have a very powerful realign of Angola as a response - you'd be realigning at a +3 (!!!), so the risk would be extremely low, and you could likely knock out 2-4 influence with a single realign to make Angola safe from coups, + spend any spare realigns on Cuba or whatever.

Onto Turn 7:

** Turn 7 Headline Phase **
Soviet Headline Card: #42  Ops 3: Quagmire * (USSR)
American Headline Card: #31  Ops 4: Red Scare/Purge

(Both good headlines.  From what I can recall, I think I was holding R S/P from last turn.  Quagmire sucks, especially since it cancels my NORAD, but at least R S/P will limit some of the damage that USSR can do on 2 consecutive AR's)

USA Headline Event: #31  Ops 4: Red Scare/Purge

The Americans play the following card as an Event:
  #31  Ops 4: Red Scare/Purge
-1 to Ops value of Soviet cards this turn (minimum 1 OP)

USSR Headline Event: #42  Ops 3: Quagmire * (USSR)

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
  #42  Ops 3: Quagmire * (USSR)

** The Quagmire card is permanently removed. **

On the next action round, US player must discard an Operations card worth
2 or more and roll less than 5.  Repeat each US player phase until successful
or no appropriate cards remain.  If out of appropriate cards, the US player may
only play scoring cards until the next turn.
** Turn 7 Action Phase **

Turn 7, USSR action round 1

The Soviets play the following card for a coup attempt:
  #40  Ops 3: Cuban Missile Crisis *
Coup attempt in Nigeria (stability 1):
      ** USSR die roll = 1 (+2) = 3
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 1.
American influence in Nigeria reduced by 1, now at 0
DEFCON Level lowered to 2
Soviet Military Operations for this turn increased to 2

(Hugely lucky for me that he only rolled a 1, especially since we know that Africa is getting scored this turn)

Turn 7, USA action round 1
The USA discards the following card because of Quagmire:
    #61  Ops 3: OPEC (USSR)
Quagmire ends on a die roll of 1-4: ** Die Roll = 3 -- The Quagmire is over!

Turn 7, USSR action round 2

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
  #35: South America Scoring

*** Scoring in South America ***
  USSR:  2(presence) +1(battlegrounds)  = 3
  USA:  2(presence) +2(battlegrounds)  = 4
VPs up 1, now at -5

(I have no idea why he scored SA at this point.  That was a waste of the two AR's he gets from the Quagmire.  He should have used the opportunity to cause some damage in Africa)

Turn 7, USA action round 2

The Americans play the following card as an Event:
  #36  Ops 3: Brush War
          The target country is Argentina
USA success on a modified die roll of 3-6; USSR is -1
  ** Die roll: 2 (-1) = 1 -- no effect **
American Military Operations for this turn increased to 3
  ** Flower Power **
VPs down 2, now at -7

(That was my only good target.  Unfortunately, I lose AND give up 2VP due to Flower Power.  Had I won, I would have at least canceled the Flower Power effect)

Turn 7, USSR action round 3

The Soviets play the following card for an attempt on the Space Race track:
#78  Ops 3: Alliance for Progress * (USA)
    ** Space Race Die Roll (1-4 needed): = 4 **
USSR progress on the Space Race Track is now at Man in Space
The Soviets may now see the enemy Headline Card before choosing their own.

Turn 7, USA action round 3

The Americans play the following card as an Event:
  #79: Africa Scoring

*** Scoring in Africa ***
  USSR: No score.
  USA:  4(domination) +4(battlegrounds)  = 8
VPs up 8, now at 1

(Huge score for me.  In hindsight, I probably could have gotten back to Nigeria and scored control, but he doesn't even have presence at this point.  I think I was just being paranoid that he had some card that could have thwarted me plan)

Turn 7, USSR action round 4
The Soviets play the following card for Ops
  #48  Ops 1: Kitchen Debates * (USA)
They elect to have the American event occur first.

** The Kitchen Debates card is permanently removed. **

USA controlled Battleground countries = 16
USSR controlled Battleground countries = 10
  ** POKE! ** POKE! ** POKE! **
VPs up 2, now at 3

The Soviets use the Kitchen Debates card for realignment rolls:

Realignment roll in Chile: USSR modifier = +2, USA modifier = +0
      ** USSR die roll = 2 (+2) = 4
      ** USA die roll = 2 (+0) = 2
American influence in Chile reduced by 2, now at 0

(At least I get the 2VP as a consolation prize...)

Turn 7, USA action round 4

The Americans play the following card for a coup attempt:
#69  Ops 2: Latin American Death Squads
Coup attempt in Colombia (stability 1):
      ** USA die roll = 2 (+2) = 4
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 2.
Soviet influence in Colombia reduced by 1, now at 0
American influence in Colombia increased by 1, now at 1
American Military Operations for this turn increased to 5

(I don't remember what my plan was exactly with this.  I think I was hoping to roll well and use it for realigns)

Here is the map at this point:

Turn 7, USSR action round 5

The Soviets play the following card for a coup attempt:
  #20  Ops 2: Olympic Games
Coup attempt in Colombia (stability 1):
      ** USSR die roll = 5 (+1) = 6
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 4.
American influence in Colombia reduced by 1, now at 0
Soviet influence in Colombia increased by 3, now at 3
Soviet Military Operations for this turn increased to 3

Turn 7, USA action round 5

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
#46  Ops 2: How I Learned to Stop Worrying *
2 USA influence added to Israel, now at 3

Turn 7, USSR action round 6
The Soviets play the following card for Ops
#68  Ops 2: John Paul II Elected Pope * (USA)
They elect to have the American event occur first.

** The John Paul II Elected Pope card is permanently removed. **

Soviet influence in Poland reduced by 2, now at 5
American influence in Poland increased by 1, now at 1

The Soviets use the John Paul II Elected Pope card to place influence:
1 USSR influence added to Botswana, now at 1

Turn 7, USA action round 6

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
  #43  Ops 3: SALT Negotiations *
1 USA influence added to Poland, now at 2
1 USA influence added to Israel, now at 4

Turn 7, USSR action round 7
The Soviets play the following card for Ops
  #41  Ops 2: Nuclear Subs * (USA)
They elect to have the American event occur first.

** The Nuclear Subs card is permanently removed. **

US actions do not affect the DEFCON track for the remainder of this turn
(does not affect Cuban Missile Crisis).

The Soviets use the Nuclear Subs card to place influence:
1 USSR influence added to Poland, now at 6

Turn 7, USA action round 7

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
#108  Ops 2: Our Man in Tehran * (USA)
1 USA influence added to Israel, now at 5
1 USA influence added to Mexico, now at 7

(I suppose I could have used it for the event - and probably still secured Israel and Mexico by not placing that sorta pointless IP in Poland - but I not sure that using this for the event on Turn 7 is really that helpfull)

** The Late War cards are added to the deck **
************************************************************
**              The  deck is being shuffled.              **
************************************************************
DEFCON Level raised to 3

Here is the map:

The map is looking pretty fantastic for me at this point, going into the Late War.  If I can just maintain the status quot then I win.  My plan is to keep Europe and Asia solidly in my favor, see to it that ME is a stalemate, contain USSR in Africa, and cause some disruption in the Americas.

US has basically won by now. They're winning Africa, Asia, and Europe, tied in SA and Middle East, and losing CA. Africa and SA have been scored already. If the scoring happens of: ME at +4 and +4, CA at +4 and +4, Europe at -5, Asia at -6, Africa at -4, at SA at +5, they USSR win by 3 points. But that's an extremely optimistic projection for them (all of the good scoring cards for them come out, but the US's good ones do not. Realistically, the USSR needs to Muslim Revolution (or Iran-Iraq war) to take back the Middle East and score it, break the US's Asia domination, take SA domination by the end of the game, and take Africa and score it.

Well, as TS said. US is winning at the moment, but the game is not over. One big coup in brazil and a realign and SA is for USSR. If USSR can sneak in 1 influence in Thailand he can take it with the China card. Moslim revolutions is still possible and would hurt.

That said, US should win this easily (as said in the topic description :P)

The problem for the Soviets is that they need a lot of things to go well for them. Taking SA won't do it, since it'll only get scored in final scoring. Taking Thailand only brings Asia to neutral. Muslim Revolution would only give him domination in the middle east, worth +2 points.

The USSR really needs to flip and score SA, or possibly CA, and then simultaneously get another big source of VPs (Arms Race, WWBY) for a Wargames win.  Barring that, DEFCON seems like the only way the US can lose.

Onto Turn 8:

** Turn 8 Headline Phase **
The USA Headline Event for Turn 8 is the following card:
  #92  Ops 2: Terrorism
Soviet Headline Card: #75  Ops 2: Liberation Theology (USSR)
American Headline Card: #92  Ops 2: Terrorism

USA Headline Event: #92  Ops 2: Terrorism

The Americans play the following card as an Event:
  #92  Ops 2: Terrorism
The USSR discards #49  Ops 2: Missile Envy

(I love that headline due to cutting his hand size.  But unfortunately, giving up Missile Envy was probably one of the best cards for him to give up, from his point of view)

USSR Headline Event: #75  Ops 2: Liberation Theology (USSR)

The Soviets use the Liberation Theology card as an Event:
2 USSR influence added to Mexico, now at 6
1 USSR influence added to Panama, now at 4
** Turn 8 Action Phase **

Turn 8, USSR action round 1

The Soviets play the following card for a coup attempt:
#6  Ops 4: The China Card
Coup attempt in Mexico (stability 2):
      ** USSR die roll = 2 (+4) = 6
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 2.
American influence in Mexico reduced by 2, now at 5
DEFCON Level lowered to 2
Soviet Military Operations for this turn increased to 4

(He knows he needs Mexico, but lucky for me he only rolls a 2 and I can just take it back)

Turn 8, USA action round 1

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
#73  Ops 3: Shuttle Diplomacy (USA)
3 USA influence added to Mexico, now at 8

Turn 8, USSR action round 2
DEFCON Level raised to 3

The Soviets play the following card for a coup attempt:
  #57  Ops 4: ABM Treaty
Coup attempt in Mexico (stability 2):
      ** USSR die roll = 2 (+4) = 6
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 2.
American influence in Mexico reduced by 2, now at 6
DEFCON Level lowered to 2
Soviet Military Operations for this turn increased to 5

(And he rolls a 2 again!)

Turn 8, USA action round 2

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
  #100  Ops 2: Formosan Resolution * (USA)
2 USA influence added to Mexico, now at 8

Turn 8, USSR action round 3

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
  #39  Ops 3: Arms Race
VPs down 3, now at 0

(Great time to play that for the event and grab the easy points)

Turn 8, USA action round 3

The Americans play the following card for an attempt on the Space Race track:
  #28  Ops 3: Suez Crisis * (USSR)
    ** Space Race Die Roll (1-3 needed): = 5 **
      No effect.

(I did this now since I wanted to give him back the initiative since I'm fine with just keeping the board as is)

Turn 8, USSR action round 4

The Soviets play the following card for an attempt on the Space Race track:
#5  Ops 3: Five Year Plan (USA)
    ** Space Race Die Roll (1-3 needed): = 4 **
      No effect.

Turn 8, USA action round 4

The Americans play the following card for realignment rolls:
  #21  Ops 4: NATO * (USA)

Realignment roll in Cuba: USA modifier = +1, USSR modifier = +1
      ** USA die roll = 4 (+1) = 5
      ** USSR die roll = 1 (+1) = 2
Soviet influence in Cuba reduced by 3, now at 0

Realignment roll in Chile: USA modifier = +0, USSR modifier = +2
      ** USA die roll = 6 (+0) = 6
      ** USSR die roll = 4 (+2) = 6
    No effect.

Realignment roll in Chile: USA modifier = +0, USSR modifier = +2
      ** USA die roll = 6 (+0) = 6
      ** USSR die roll = 1 (+2) = 3
Soviet influence in Chile reduced by 3, now at 0

Realignment roll in Argentina: USA modifier = +0, USSR modifier = +2
      ** USA die roll = 6 (+0) = 6
      ** USSR die roll = 2 (+2) = 4
Soviet influence in Argentina reduced by 2, now at 0

Here is the map at this point:

Now here was where I got REALLY lucky and certainly sealed the win.  I was really only interested in kicking him out of Cuba.  Without any other good targets, I took a shot at SA rolling at -2 and rolled huge!

Turn 8, USSR action round 5

The Soviets play the following card to place influence:
#110  Ops 2: The Cambridge Five (USSR)
2 USSR influence added to Argentina, now at 2

Turn 8, USA action round 5
The Americans play the following card for Ops
  #90  Ops 4: Glasnost * (USSR)
They elect to have the Soviet event occur first.

(I was saving this card to do a follow up battle ground coup if/when the need arose.  In this spot, there was no better card in the deck that I could possibly have played, except for ABM, which he had)

** The Glasnost card is permanently removed. **

VPs down 2, now at -2
DEFCON Level raised to 3

The Americans use the Glasnost card for a coup attempt:
Coup attempt in Argentina (stability 2):
      ** USA die roll = 6 (+4) = 10
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 6.
Soviet influence in Argentina reduced by 2, now at 0
American influence in Argentina increased by 4, now at 4
DEFCON Level lowered to 2
American Military Operations for this turn increased to 4

Turn 8, USSR action round 6

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
  #62  Ops 1: 'Lone Gunman' * (USSR)

(No way US loses by DEFCON suicide now)

** The 'Lone Gunman' card is permanently removed. **

The Soviet gets to look at the American Hand:

The Soviets play the following card for realignment rolls:
  #62  Ops 1: 'Lone Gunman' * (USSR)

Realignment roll in Argentina: USSR modifier = +1, USA modifier = +1
      ** USSR die roll = 1 (+1) = 2
      ** USA die roll = 2 (+1) = 3

Turn 8, USA action round 6

(Now, I was hugely lucky to get both AWACS and Muslim Revolution on the same hand.  I get to do an unbelievable combo...)

The Americans play the following card as an Event:
#107  Ops 3: AWACS Sale to Saudis * (USA)

** The AWACS Sale to Saudis card is permanently removed. **

American influence in Saudi Arabia increased by 2, now at 2

(He now has to waste a round fixing this)

Turn 8, USSR action round 7

The Soviets play the following card to place influence:
  #93  Ops 2: Iran-Contra Scandal * (USSR)
2 USSR influence added to Saudi Arabia, now at 5

Turn 8, USA action round 7

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
#56  Ops 4: Muslim Revolution (USSR)
3 USA influence added to Chile, now at 3
1 USA influence added to Mexico, now at 9
DEFCON Level raised to 3

(That's 4 free ops since this otherwise great event for the USSR is now unplayable)

Here is the map:

That was an unbelievably amazing hand for the US coupled with amazing luck on those realignment rolls.  SA is now under US control.  CA is never going to be under USSR control and probably never going to be dominated.  ME can't be flipped using a Muslim Revolution combo.  And Lone Gunman is out of the deck.  Cuba will remain empty to guard against Ortega.  The rest of the game is really just a formality.

** Turn 9 Headline Phase **
The USA Headline Event for Turn 9 is the following card:
#80  Ops 2: 'One Small Step...'
Soviet Headline Card: #51  Ops 3: Brezhnev Doctrine * (USSR)
American Headline Card: #80  Ops 2: 'One Small Step...'

(Forgot that was still even in the deck.  Fantastic headline for the USSR in the late war.  I, unfortunately, had nothing of real value to headline.  I figured I would play this and try to beat USSR to the next step on the space race for the points and for Star Wars next turn)

USSR Headline Event: #51  Ops 3: Brezhnev Doctrine * (USSR)

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
  #51  Ops 3: Brezhnev Doctrine * (USSR)

** The Brezhnev Doctrine card is permanently removed. **

All USSR operations cards increase their value by one (+1) for the remainder
of this turn (Maximum of 4).

USA Headline Event: #80  Ops 2: 'One Small Step...'

The Americans play the following card as an Event:
#80  Ops 2: 'One Small Step...'
USA progress on the Space Race Track is now at Man in Space
The Soviets may no longer see the enemy Headline Card before choosing their own.
** Turn 9 Action Phase **

Turn 9, USSR action round 1

The Soviets play the following card for a coup attempt:
#88  Ops 2: Marine Barracks Bombing * (USSR)
Coup attempt in Mexico (stability 2):
      ** USSR die roll = 6 (+3) = 9
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 5.
American influence in Mexico reduced by 5, now at 4
DEFCON Level lowered to 2
Soviet Military Operations for this turn increased to 3

(Desperate move, but perfect result.  Any other roll and he wastes his coup)

Turn 9, USA action round 1
The Americans play the following card for Ops
#82  Ops 3: Iranian Hostage Crisis * (USSR)
They elect to have the Soviet event occur first.

** The Iranian Hostage Crisis card is permanently removed. **

American influence in Iran now at 0
Soviet influence in Iran increased by 2, now at 4

(Fine by me - wasn't planning on contesting Iran anyway)

The Americans use the Iranian Hostage Crisis card to place influence:
3 USA influence added to Cuba, now at 3

Turn 9, USSR action round 2

The Soviets play the following card for an attempt on the Space Race track:
#63  Ops 2: Colonial Rear Guards (USA)
    ** Space Race Die Roll (1-3 needed): = 5 **
      No effect.

Turn 9, USA action round 2

The Americans play the following card as an Event:
  #1: Asia Scoring

*** Scoring in Asia ***
  USSR:  3(presence) +2(battlegrounds)  = 5
  USA:  7(domination) +4(battlegrounds) +1(adj. to USSR)  = 12
VPs up 7, now at 5

(With some breathing room, I grab my 7VP)

Turn 9, USSR action round 3

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
  #33  Ops 3: De-Stalinization * (USSR)

** The De-Stalinization card is permanently removed. **

1 De-Stalinization influence removed from Finland, now at 0
1 De-Stalinization influence removed from Yugoslavia, now at 0
1 De-Stalinization influence removed from Bulgaria, now at 0
1 De-Stalinization influence removed from Vietnam, now at 1
1 De-Stalinization influence added to Nigeria, now at 1
1 De-Stalinization influence added to Haiti, now at 1
2 De-Stalinization influence added to Peru, now at 2

(I guess his plan is to setup some desperate realignment rolls)

Turn 9, USA action round 3
The Americans play the following card for Ops
  #112  Ops 3: Che (USSR)
They elect to have the Soviet event occur first.
Coup attempt in Morocco (stability 3):
      ** USSR die roll = 6 (+4) = 10
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 4.
American influence in Morocco reduced by 3, now at 0
Soviet influence in Morocco increased by 1, now at 1
Soviet Military Operations for this turn increased to 5
The coup is successful: the USSR may make another coup

(This was a good time to dump Che since he has only 1 target and I only lose out if he rolls exactly a 6... which he does)

The Americans use the Che card for a coup attempt:
Coup attempt in Peru (stability 2):
      ** USA die roll = 2 (+3) = 5
The modified roll exceeds the doubled stability by 1.
Soviet influence in Peru reduced by 1, now at 1
American Military Operations for this turn increased to 3

Turn 9, USSR action round 4

The Soviets play the following card to place influence:
  #101  Ops 2: Iran-Iraq War *
2 USSR influence added to Brazil, now at 2

Turn 9, USA action round 4

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
  #24  Ops 2: Indo-Pakistani War
2 USA influence added to Brazil, now at 4
  ** Flower Power **
VPs down 2, now at 3

Turn 9, USSR action round 5

The Soviets play the following card to place influence:
  #13  Ops 2: Arab-Israeli War (USSR)
2 USSR influence added to Brazil, now at 4

Turn 9, USA action round 5

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
#83  Ops 3: The Iron Lady * (USA)
3 USA influence added to Brazil, now at 7

Turn 9, USSR action round 6
The Soviets play the following card for Ops
#84  Ops 2: Reagan Bombs Libya * (USA)
They elect to have the American event occur first.

** The Reagan Bombs Libya card is permanently removed. **

VPs up 1, now at 4

The Soviets use the Reagan Bombs Libya card to place influence:
2 USSR influence added to Venezuela, now at 5

Turn 9, USA action round 6

(I finally catch on to what he is doing - setting up Latin American Debt Crisis.  I use China so I can hold on to Socialist Gov't and use that as my discard)

The Americans play the following card to place influence:
#6  Ops 4: The China Card
3 USA influence added to Venezuela, now at 8
1 USA influence added to Chile, now at 4

Turn 9, USSR action round 7

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
#95  Ops 2: Latin American Debt Crisis (USSR)
The US player discards the following card to avoid the penalty:
#7  Ops 3: Socialist Governments (USSR)

Turn 9, USA action round 7
The Americans play the following card for Ops
#52  Ops 2: Portuguese Empire Crumbles * (USSR)
They elect to have the Soviet event occur first.

** The Portuguese Empire Crumbles card is permanently removed. **

Soviet influence in SE African States increased by 2, now at 2
Soviet influence in Angola increased by 2, now at 4

The Americans use the Portuguese Empire Crumbles card to place influence:
2 USA influence added to Tunisia, now at 2
DEFCON Level raised to 3

Here is the map:

A valiant effort on USSR part, but his slim chance of winning went out the window with the failed maneuver in SA.

** Turn 10 Headline Phase **
Soviet Headline Card: #50  Ops 4: 'We Will Bury You' * (USSR)
American Headline Card: #47  Ops 2: Junta

USSR Headline Event: #50  Ops 4: 'We Will Bury You' * (USSR)

(My headline was thwarted.  One of the rare times that I've seen this card played for the event)

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
#50  Ops 4: 'We Will Bury You' * (USSR)

** The 'We Will Bury You' card is permanently removed. **

Unless UN Intervention is played as an Event on the US player's next round, USSR gains 3 VP.
DEFCON Level lowered to 2

USA Headline Event: #47  Ops 2: Junta

The Americans use the Junta card as an Event:
American influence in Guatemala increased by 2, now at 2

The Americans use the Junta card for realignment rolls:

Realignment roll in Mexico: USA modifier = +2, USSR modifier = +1
      ** USA die roll = 1 (+2) = 3
      ** USSR die roll = 6 (+1) = 7
American influence in Mexico reduced by 4, now at 0

Realignment roll in Mexico: USA modifier = +2, USSR modifier = +1
      ** USA die roll = 4 (+2) = 6
      ** USSR die roll = 3 (+1) = 4
Soviet influence in Mexico reduced by 2, now at 4

(I'm stuck with realignments, and they fail.  Unlucky)

** Turn 10 Action Phase **

Turn 10, USSR action round 1

The Soviets play the following card as an Event:
  #37: Central America Scoring

WWBY is a fine headline for USSR.  You lose 4 Ops, but 3 VP is huge.  Plus it is a great way to trap all those US players who drop DEFCON in the headline.
