The ideal hand
« on: February 18, 2013, 08:24:22 am »

What would be your perfect hand for AR1 - both USSR and US and what cards would you want your opponent to be holding.

As USA I'd want:
Marshall Plan
Nuclear Test Ban
Destalinisation (so I know where it is and to hold)
Warsaw Pact (to use the event)
Arab Israeli War (to know where it is)
DeGaulle so I can defuse the event

Recently I drew as Soviets:
Nuclear Test Ban
US/Japan Mutual Defense Pact
De Gaulle
Vietnam Revolts

Somehow, I managed to screw this hand up, was in a horribly situation by Turn 3, and committed DEFCON suicide (via playing CIA created) out of the shame of blowing this hand.

I'm not yet sure as US whether Containment or RS/P is better on Turn 1.  I guess obviously I'd like to headline RS/P and the USSR to headline Containment :D

As either player I'd like to have all five 4 Ops: US/Japan, Nuclear Test Ban, NATO, RS/P, Marshall Plan.

As USSR, if I had that, I'd also probably want UN Intervention to deal with Marshall Plan.  Then add on Decolonization and De-Stalinization, and there's the 8.  Alternatively, scrap Marshall Plan and replace it (and UN) with Vietnam Revolts and Blockade (to combo with RS/P), or possibly Nasser / Socialist Governments.  The key is, there's a lot of great USSR Turn 1 hands.

As US, with those cards, I'd add on Warsaw Pact Formed, Containment (to be saved to next turn), and I suppose for hand management sake I'd like to have De-Stalinization instead.

Here I tried to construct my hand with a 'big picture' in mind. Not as a self contained 'most ops in one hand', but the cards most likely to cause a problem for the US, and be a boon to the USSR.

Red Scare/Purge (to headline)
Defectors (so I know my headline won't be canceled)
Nuclear Test Ban
Blockade (Play on AR5)
Warsaw Pact (to play for ops)
Five Year Plan
CIA Created (To activate on AR6)

Strengths: Can trigger CIA Created late in the hand with FYP. RS/P definitely hits. Blockade is extremely likely to work with RS/P in effect.
Weakness: If the US plays Fidel, CIA Created will be defcon suicide. US might headline Marshall Plan, which will activate NATO and be a liability with Special Relationship out there. Defectors is a negative VP unless spaced, or possibly paired with FYP. US can headline Containment and cancel out RS/P. US might just save Marshall Plan or US/Japan to discard with Blockade.

All things being equal, I don't want De-Stalinization in my Turn1 hand. Not enough influence on the board, and I want the defcon low before I put influence in Africa or South America. Decolonization is better, but it's very tempting to put influence in an Africa bg in that case...
