Worst game ever: USA totally annihilated.

Hi all.

Yesterday I played the last game of a small tournament among friends. This game settled the winner of the tournament. I played with USA with optional cards without additional influence.
I had very bad card hands and the game ended in turn 4 by automatic victory of USSR. I canít conceive worse luck in a game:

Initial influence of USSR was E. Germany (0/4), Poland (0/3) and Yugoslavia (0/2).

My hand in Turn 1 was:
0 ops Europe Scoring
0 ops Middle East Scoring
0 ops Asia Scoring
1 ops Captured Nazi Scientist*
1 ops Nasser*
2 ops Formosan Resolution*
2 ops Arab-Israeli War
3 ops Socialist Governments

What a horrible hand! The two good points are that I can get rid of scorings soon (maybe avoiding soviets scoring too many points in Early War) and as I had Socialist Governments I could safely headline Euro Scoring.

USA headline: Europe Scoring.
USSR headline: Cambridge Five.

Thatís awful. At this point he was grinning without mercy. After a successfully Iran coup, you can imagine the rest. At the end of Turn 1 I was behind in points and with a gloomy board position.
But the worst was still to come.

Turn 2.
My hand was all red events but 5 Years Plan.
USA headline: 5 Years Plan. (Fortunately discarding Blockade.)
USSR headline: Red Scare.

At the end of this terrible second turn, he had complete Domination in the three regions.
I thought that maybe it was not too late, that with an incredible twist of fate I still had a small opportunity. Maybe forgetting about Europe and Middle East, fighting for Asia while crossing the fingers waiting for a miracle. Perhaps a combination of Grain Sales, Duck and Cover and CIA created. Well, that was asking too much.

In Turn 3 he got Europe Scoring and I got Middle East Scoring. Yuk!
In Turn 4 he got Southeast Asia Scoring and I was finished.

After this terrible game, I was thinking about how many games are utterly doomed for the USA playing without additional influence or the Chinese war variant.
How much is the percentage of games impossible to overcome for the USA?
I guess the figure is not negligible.

What do you think?

That was a pretty bad hand.  I'd say I've never seen a T1 hand as bad as that in > 100 games of TS.  In real life, you can play with a mulligan where you redeal if someone has 3 scoring cards and/or < 12 Ops.

<12 ops is not that uncommon.

On Turn 1 I think < 12 Ops is pretty bad.  If half your hand is 1 Ops and the other half is 2 Ops, you're doing worse than that.  It also means your opponent is likely significantly over 17 Ops.

That's for real gonna be a rule in our next tournament ;)

Worst hand possible:
As USSR:
Europe Scoring
Asia Scoring
Middle East Scoring
CIA created
Truman Doctrine
Blockade
Romanian Abdication
Captured Nazi Scientist

The bright side of this hand is that Red Scare/Purge has no effect on you.

The USSR hand is worse than any US hand because US is actually okay with getting scoring cards out of the way early.

That's a good point. Unhappily in my commented game I got Red Scared in turn 2 :(

Worst hand possible:
As USSR:
Europe Scoring
Asia Scoring
Middle East Scoring
CIA created
Truman Doctrine
Blockade
Romanian Abdication
Captured Nazi Scientist
This is not too bad, I think. It allows the USSR to choose when to activate some bad events.

Headline Middle East to start for a punt.

Starting influence 3 to Poland, 3 to Finland, and you can use Truman Doctrine harmlessly. (Though not Headline, in case the US tries to be cute with EEU.)

Asia can be played before the US reaches Thailand.

If the US plays Independent Reds for ops, Romanian Abdication event is worth considering.

Europe will probably be a stalemate too.

As long as the US doesn't play Fidel or De-Stalinization for you, CIA Created can be played even at Defcon 2.

Finally you can choose to trigger Blockade and see if you can force the US to discard a good USSR event, or trigger Captured Nazi Scientist and get ahead in the space race.

A hand like this means the US has more likelihood for holding bad USSR events. (Though having to coup with 1op cards hurts.) All scoring cards being out on Turn1 just means you have more opportunity to prepare for them after Turn2.

Best to be optimistic in this game.  ;D

You're aware that there is no way to stop US from taking Pakistan, India, and Thailand on Turn 1. Also, with the high ops that the US is likely to have, him grabbing Middle East battlegrounds or European non-battlegrounds is very likely.

"No way to stop"? Not true. Even a 1-op coup of Iran has a 1/2 chance of removing US influence.

Even if the US gets to Pakistan and India, maybe Indo-Pakistani War will bring it back eventually.

If my opponent couped with a 1-op, there is no way I wouldn't coup it back. You only have a 1/6 chance, by emptying Iran.

That USSR hand does suck, but agree that the silver lining is being able to get rid of CIA Created & Truman moderately safely, as well as defuse the scoring cards for only a moderate loss now (since the perfect Early War nightmare for the USSR is probably just plain low ops / bad luck on turn 1, and then drawing 3 scoring cards on turn 2.)

Definitely disagree on the 3 POL / 4 FIN setup; that is so incredibly owned by an East European Unrest headline it's horrible.  Truman Doctrine instantly goes live, you risk not even having Presence in Europe when you know you have Europe Scoring in hand, and you will probably be forced to blow the China Card to repair the damage.  This is definitely a safety 4 GDR / 5 POL play, which also turns off Truman but much more safely.  I'd headline Asia scoring - this will raise eyebrows from the US player, but with that hand I'm basically conceding Asia and hoping for the best later, and this gets you a point.  I will then China Card coup Iran and hope for the best - ideally a huge amount of influence that scares the US off from couping back, but clearing the US out is also acceptable.  Pretty much no matter what happens on the US AR1 - counter-coup, whatever - I'll then play Middle East Scoring.  If the US ignored Iran or their coup fizzled, the US doesn't have Presence and I might from Iran, so that's good; if the US counter-coup'd, then better to use ME Scoring now before the US gets a domination.  Do NOT be tempted to use your 1 influence to grab Syria in the "happy" case as this is far too weak a play for AR2, and will tip the US off for sure that your hand is shenanigans and also contains ME scoring, which they will quickly deny via expanding.  Basically, you should be safe from a US dom barring the very unusual play of something like China coup clears Iran to 0 -> US uses a 4 ops for 2 in Egypt & 2 in Jordan (2 in Egypt & 1 in Lebanon -> you coup Lebanon with a 1 op first.).  After ME Scoring, it'll likely be time for ninja Europe scoring before the US gets a Dom there, too.

Anyway, this play should defuse the Asia & Europe scoring cards for a push or slightly better, and gives you a fighting shot in the Middle East by using China there.  Your ARs 4-6 are going to suck as you throw away CIA, etc., but at least you can't be punished for it right away.  I'd definitely throw almost every spare op into the ME on the theory that I'm getting dominated for sure in the other regions, so might as well have one region I'm doing okay in.  (A solid Iran coup that sticks *might* allow dropping a trail of 1 ops through Pakistan & India in a likely futile race for SE Asia, but whatever.)
