Unexpected Collapse

Recently Krzemyk posted here a victorious game's report, now it's my turn to pay him off. The game was played on Vassal on Sat, 24th of May, 2013, and was very nobody received a solid advantage in the entire game. It might seem bit static but I would rather see it as a good strategic game. The game was played with Optional Cards, Standard Rules and no additional Influence. I post early war now and I will try to catch up after a break.

Let me start first we few general thoughts about TS. In general I prefer playing spoiled 'murcans. As Krzemyk mentioned, I am rather an aggressive board game player (my girlfriend has already banned TS in our relationship, nobody ever trades with me in settlers of catan, Euphrates and Tigris is absolutely off the table with me) and I have a feeling that the Americans really sets the pace in the game. AR7 is huge advantage and when properly set, strengthen up with a good headline, gives so many opportunities to play.
So, here we are: I will play spoiled american vampires and Krzemyk will enjoy filthy soviet werewolves (to keep Twilight's atmosphere, right?).

My hand:
Special Relationship
Arab-Israeli war
Captired Nazis
Nuclear Test Ban
Defectors
Formosan Resolution
Marshall Plan
Vietnam Revolts

Not a bad hand - 19 OP's and nothing that requires any immediate attention. However the payoff is that I did not get any of: Suez, De Gaulle, Blockade, Decol, and Destal which leaves to many strong cards to the opponent. Also I did not get strong cards to pressurize opponent a bit, therefore I will rather play defensively. Krzemyk's opening setup is 4 Pol/4EG/1 Austria while I decide on Marshalling (I like this opening) and go with 3 WG/2 Italy/1 Greece/1 Turkey. The headline is obvious and I think everybody noticed one more strong card missing from my hand.

US headline: Defectors
 USSR headline: Read Scare/Purge

Indeed.

AR1
*** Soviet plays NATO* for 4 Ops.
*** Soviet initiates coup in Iran with 4 Ops.
* Soviet Die = [2] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet changes DefCon to 4.
* Soviet changes Soviet Military Ops to 4.
* Removing 1 American Influence from Iran.
* Adding 1 Soviet Influence in Iran.

*** American plays Nuclear Test Ban for 4 Ops.
*** American initiates coup in Iran with 4 Ops.
* U.S. Die = [3] *** <American>
* American changes DefCon to 3.
* American changes American Military Ops to 4.
* Removing 1 Soviet Influence from Iran.
* Adding 2 American Influence in Iran.

Weak Coup answered with not-so-strong Coup. Defcon 3. Let's see where it goes now.

AR2
*** Soviet plays East European Unrest Event ***

* US may remove 1 Influence from each of 3 countries in E. Europe.
Soviet Influence in Poland was decreased from 4 to 3.
Soviet Influence in E. Germany was decreased from 4 to 3.
Soviet Influence in Finland was decreased from 1 to 0.

*** Soviet plays East European Unrest for 3 Ops.
* Soviet Die = [5] *** <Soviet>
*** Soviet initiates coup in Iran with 3 Ops.
* Soviet changes DefCon to 2.
* Soviet changes Soviet Military Ops to 5.
U.S. Influence in Iran was decreased from 2 to 0.
Soviet Influence in Iran was increased from 0 to 2.

*** American plays Special Relationship for 2 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Malaysia was increased from 0 to 1.
U.S. Influence in Lebanon was increased from 0 to 1.

He got lucky in a coup war (ok, not really, it was rather expected), but for the prize of weakening the position in Europe. I started a run for Bangkok and achieved a presence in ME (also preparing to play Arab wars for OPs).

AR3:
*** Soviet plays Olympic Games for 2 Ops.

Soviet Influence in Afghanistan was increased from 0 to 2.

*** American plays Arab-Israeli War Event ***
* Soviet Die = [1] *** <American>
* Soviet Military Ops alread at 5.
* Die-roll modifier: -1
* Israel wins Arab-Israeli War..
*** American plays Arab-Israeli War for 2 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Thailand was increased from 0 to 2.

I don't know what is so interesting in Afghanistan that everybody wants to get there, unless he wants to secure Pakistan form the war. However this hesitation might cost a lot later. Meanwhile, I get rid of the war and reach Thai public houses.

AR4:
*** Soviet plays Fidel* for 2 Ops.

Soviet Influence in Pakistan was increased from 0 to 2.

*** American plays Formosan Resolution* for 2 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Laos/Cambodia was increased from 0 to 1.
U.S. Influence in Egypt was increased from 0 to 1.

Here comes Pakistan, while I take Laos. I was not sure how to space second OP therefore I decided to give a shot in Egypt - maybe he does not have Nasser.

AR5:
*** Soviet plays Nasser* Event ***

Soviet Influence in Egypt was increased from 0 to 2.
U.S. Influence in Egypt was decreased from 1 to 0.

*** American plays Marshall Plan* Event ***
U.S. Influence in Canada was increased from 2 to 3.
U.S. Influence in W. Germany was increased from 3 to 4.
U.S. Influence in Italy was increased from 2 to 3.
U.S. Influence in Turkey was increased from 1 to 2.
U.S. Influence in Greece was increased from 1 to 2.
U.S. Influence in Finland was increased from 0 to 1.
U.S. Influence in Spain/Portugal was increased from 0 to 1.

He had Nasser. At least I got time to finally Marshallize Yurop.

AR6:
*** Soviet plays CIA Created* for 1 Ops.

Soviet Influence in India was increased from 0 to 1.
*** Soviet plays CIA Created* Event ***
* Soviet Hand is revealed.
*** American plays card for 1 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Thailand was increased from 2 to 3.

*** American plays Vietnam Revolts* Event ***
Soviet Influence in Vietnam was increased from 0 to 2.
*** American plays Vietnam Revolts* for 2 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Thailand was increased from 3 to 4.
U.S. Influence in Burma was increased from 0 to 1.

The game is straightforward. He managed to get rid of CIA and placed 1 IP in India, I learned that he keeps Destal for the next turn and secured Thailand from China-flip. I gave him access to SEA, entered birma and put one to Thai. I know it seems over-protected but again, I was worried about Destal in the headline followed by China-flip. Still possible but sparing 2 IP's from Destal and handing me China seems like a high price. Yurop looks alright (still waiting for Suez and De Gaulle before moving to Paris), ME is bad, as usual, and unfortunately he dominates asia at this moment (danger of early scoring card) but I preferred to risk and secure Thailand better. Also, I saved Nazis scientist - 2 VP's are not enough convincing to play it in the early game.  The Score is 0, time for the next round. Here's the mandatory picture:

Turn 2:

My hand:
ME scoring
Suez Crisis
The Cambridge Five
Korean War
Blockade
Comecon
Containment
Nazis

Red hand. However I think with the containment I can get something from this hand (get rid of blockade, and Suez) and early ME scoring might save me some points - Krzemyk has only presence yet.

* American reveals Containment* in Headline Phase.
* Soviet reveals Romanian Abdication* in Headline Phase.

*** American plays Containment* Event ***
* US adds 1 Ops to cards played this turn (to maxmimum of 4).
*** Soviet plays Romanian Abdication* Event ***
Soviet Influence in Romania was increased from 0 to 3.

Interesting. Seems that Krzemyk has nothing really aggressive.

AR1:
*** Soviet plays Warsaw Pact Formed* for 3 Ops.

*** Soviet initiates coup in Panama with 3 Ops.
* Soviet Die = [3] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet changes DefCon to 2.
* Soviet changes Soviet Military Ops to 3.
U.S. Influence in Panama was decreased from 1 to 0.
Soviet Influence in Panama was increased from 0 to 1.

*** American plays COMECON* for 4 Ops.
U.S. Influence in India was increased from 0 to 4.
*** American plays COMECON* Event ***
Soviet Influence in E. Germany was increased from 3 to 4.
Soviet Influence in Poland was increased from 3 to 4.
Soviet Influence in Finland was increased from 0 to 1.
Soviet Influence in Austria was increased from 1 to 2.

Krzemyk decided to secure his ME and start sprouting in CA. He gives up on India which makes sense only if ... . However securing Burma and playing 3 to India would leave it vulnerable to China. So now it's the time for little gamble.

AR2:
*** Soviet plays Indo-Pakistani War Event ***

* Soviet Die = [3] *** <Soviet>
* Pakistan invades India
* Soviet changes Soviet Military Ops to 5.
* Die-roll modifier: 0
* India wins Indo-Pakistani War.

*** American plays Middle East Scoring Event ***
* Soviets gain 2 VPs.
* American changes VPs to 2 Soviet Victory Points.

Lucky, lucky, lucky. Won the war and got rid of ME scoring losing only 2 VP's.

AR3:
*** Soviet plays De-Stalinization* Event ***

Soviet Influence in Austria was decreased from 2 to 1.
Soviet Influence in Romania was decreased from 3 to 0.
Soviet Influence in Brazil was increased from 0 to 1.
Soviet Influence in Argentina was increased from 0 to 1.
Soviet Influence in Nigeria was increased from 0 to 1.
Soviet Influence in Angola was increased from 0 to 1.

*** American plays Korean War* Event ***
* Soviet Die = [3] *** <American>
* Soviet Military Ops alread at 5.
* Die-roll modifier: 0
* South wins Korean War.
*** American plays Korean War* for 3 Ops.
U.S. Influence in S. Korea was increased from 1 to 3.
U.S. Influence in Jordan was increased from 0 to 1.

Ok, this explains Abdication. He enters Africa and SA. I win the war, secure Gangnam Style and put one in Jordan. In retrospection, I would have rather put IP's from Jordan to either Canada (NORAD) or Burma. Or maybe South Africa? Jordan seems like a waste of IP.

AR4:
*** Soviet plays UN Intervention Event ***

*** Soviet plays Five Year Plan for 3 Ops.
Soviet Influence in Syria was increased from 1 to 2.
Soviet Influence in Iraq was increased from 1 to 3.

*** American plays Captured Nazi Scientist* Event ***
* American changes American Space Race to Earth Satellite.
* American changes VPs to 0 Victory Points.

Oh, right, I think I wanted to pretend I am interested in Iraq's oil field. When he secures Soviet Regime, I use help of Nazis to send Apollo 1 into the orbit and get 2 easy VP's.

AR5:
*** Soviet plays Independent Reds* Event ***

* US may add Influence in one of Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, or Czechoslovakia to equal USSR Influence.
*** Soviet plays Independent Reds* for 2 Ops.
Soviet Influence in Libya was increased from 0 to 2.

*** American plays Suez Crisis* Event ***
* USSR may remove 4 Influence from France, the U.K. and/or Israel - no more than 2 per country.
*** American plays Suez Crisis* for 4 Ops.
U.S. Influence in U.K. was decreased from 5 to 3.
U.S. Influence in Israel was decreased from 1 to 0.
U.S. Influence in Israel was increased from 0 to 1.
U.S. Influence in Burma was increased from 1 to 2.
U.S. Influence in Malaysia was increased from 1 to 2.
U.S. Influence in Indonesia was increased from 0 to 1.

Again, rather passive game. He strengthen his ME, I do my job in Asia and SEA. Also I decided to play Suez to remove it from the game and discard Cambridge Five during Blockade (sweet Containment)

AR6:
*** Soviet plays Socialist Governments for 3 Ops.

Soviet Influence in Panama was increased from 1 to 2.
Soviet Influence in Brazil was increased from 1 to 2.
Soviet Influence in Argentina was increased from 1 to 2.

*** American plays Blockade* Event ***
US player must discard a '3' or more Ops card or lose all Influence in W. Germany.
* American discards The Cambridge Five
*** American plays Blockade* for 2 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Angola was increased from 0 to 1.

He expands in CA and SA, really nothing I can do about. On the other hand, I get rid of blockade and I try to get to Zaire in my AR1. Or Coup something in SA/CA. I did not perform any Coups this turn and get penalized by 2 VP's leaving the scoring at -2 VP's (soviet leading). I managed quite bad hand, got rid of Suez, Blockade and ME scoring. Asia is mine and Europe, if contested smartly, as well. So far, not bad. Pic after Turn 2: .

Turn 3:

My hand:
Decolonization
Truman
UN Intervention
Five-Year plan
NORAD
INDO-Pakistani War
Europe Scoring
Olympic Games

14 OP's, rather weak hand, nothing really interesting to play. At least I got Decol so I can limit Krzemyk in Africa. He will score Asia I will score Europe. It would be great if I can get France before, however De Gaulle has not appeared yet and with this hand I am not sure If I can use NORAD and 5y Plan for it. Even Truman does not seem helpful. Lacking any good headline I played Olympic Games. Very luckily because I just realized that Duck and Cover did not show up yet! I must have forgotten about it.

Headline:
*** American plays Olympic Games Event ***
* U.S. gains 2 VPs.
* Soviet changes VPs to 0 Victory Points.
*** Soviet plays Fidel* Event ***
Soviet Influence in Cuba was increased from 0 to 3.

Indeed, lucky for me.

AR1:
*** Soviet plays Duck and Cover Event ***

* Soviet changes DefCon to 2.
* Soviet changes VPs to 3 American Victory Points.
*** Soviet plays Duck and Cover for 3 Ops.
Soviet Influence in Angola was increased from 1 to 2.
Soviet Influence in Lebanon was increased from 0 to 1.

*** American plays Five Year Plan for 3 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Lebanon was increased from 1 to 2.
U.S. Influence in Zaire was increased from 0 to 1.
U.S. Influence in Morocco was increased from 0 to 1.

Uff... I could have easily lost this game by now, I need to remember it for the future games. Meanwhile... ME scoring again? Better take care of it. Also moving to Zair and going moving to Algeria, hoping he will play De Gaulle soon.

AR2:
*** Soviet plays Socialist Governments for 3 Ops.

Soviet Influence in Lebanon was increased from 1 to 3.

*** American plays UN Intervention Event ***
American player must select card to play for Ops.
*** American plays Decolonization for 2 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Canada was increased from 3 to 4.
U.S. Influence in Jordan was increased from 1 to 2.

He's stubborn. Fortunately for me, he misses the second chance in 3 Turns to weaken my position in Europe. I take another non-battleground country in ME (actually weird move to Jordan paid off again!) and Canada if I decide to play NORAD.

AR3:
*** Soviet plays Middle East Scoring Event ***

* Soviets gain 6 VPs.
* Soviet changes VPs to 3 Soviet Victory Points.

* Soviet player updated turn to Turn 3, Round 3: American
*** American plays Indo-Pakistani War Event ***
* U.S. Die = [6] *** <American>
* U.S. gains 2 VPs.
* American changes VPs to 1 Soviet Victory Point.
Soviet Influence in Pakistan was decreased from 2 to 0.
U.S. Influence in Pakistan was increased from 0 to 2.

I could not believe this output! I played the war to get 2 military operations, while waiting for the french general and I received such a surprise! Also, ME scored, as expected. Saved 3 points from the presence. Game seems pretty passive but I could not see any good openings in Africa or Americas with my cards.

AR4:
*** Soviet plays The China Card for 4 Ops.

Soviet Influence in Pakistan was increased from 0 to 4.

*** American plays Truman Doctrine* for 1 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Algeria was increased from 0 to 1.

And here was my Pakistan control... While waiting I slowly go for future domination in Africa.

AR5:
*** Soviet plays Asia Scoring Event ***

* U.S. gains 5 VPs.
* Soviet changes VPs to 4 American Victory Points.

*** American plays Europe Scoring Event ***

And finally I gave up.

AR6:
*** Soviet plays US/Japan Mutual Defense Pact* Event ***

U.S. Influence in Japan was increased from 1 to 4.
*** Soviet plays US/Japan Mutual Defense Pact* for 4 Ops.
Soviet Influence in Pakistan was increased from 4 to 5.
Soviet Influence in Venezuela was increased from 0 to 2.
\Soviet Influence in Saudi Arabia was increased from 0 to 1.

*** American plays NORAD* for 3 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Algeria was increased from 1 to 2.
U.S. Influence in Mexico was increased from 0 to 2.

I could not decide what I want to do on my final round. Since Turn 3 is late for NORAD I decided to play it for IP's, despite I could not find any good threat. I brought McDonalds to little brothers in Mexico (early CA scoring) and secured Algeria. He also gave me Japan (finally). On the other hand, my opponent has SA almost under control, no threat from me and good position in Africa. Despite I have +6 VP's (he did not collected any Military Operations this Turn), the situation is not great. Pic:

Ok, I need some rest now.

Turn 4:

My hand:
Arms Race
Colonial Rear Guards
Latin American Death Squads
U2 Incident
Quagmire
OPEC
NATO
Flower Power
Africa Scoring

Nice hand, powerful. Colonial Rear Guards in the headline gives me an access to Africa and I can easily space OPEC (unplayable at this moment - 5 VP's) and wait with Quagmiring myself for the next turn.

*** American plays Colonial Rear Guards Event ***
U.S. Influence in Philippines was increased from 1 to 2.
U.S. Influence in Nigeria was increased from 0 to 1.
U.S. Influence in Angola was increased from 1 to 2.
U.S. Influence in South Africa was increased from 1 to 2.
*** Soviet plays "One Small Step..." Event ***
* Soviet changes Soviet Space Race to Animal in Space.

AR1:
*** Soviet plays Warsaw Pact Formed* for 3 Ops.

*** Soviet initiates coup in Zaire with 3 Ops.
* Soviet Die = [5] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet changes DefCon to 2.
* Soviet changes Soviet Military Ops to 3.
Soviet Influence in Zaire was increased from 0 to 5.
U.S. Influence in Zaire was decreased from 1 to 0.

*** American plays NATO* for 4 Ops.
U.S. Influence in South Africa was increased from 2 to 3.
U.S. Influence in Angola was increased from 2 to 3.
U.S. Influence in Nigeria was increased from 1 to 2.
U.S. Influence in Morocco was increased from 1 to 2.

In response to soviet offensive in Zaire I take the rest of Africa. Now, I think I should rather make Nigeria 3/1 instead of placing IP in Morocco.

AR2:
*** Soviet plays Nuclear Test Ban for 4 Ops.

Soviet Influence in Chile was increased from 0 to 3.
Soviet Influence in Venezuela was increased from 2 to 3.

*** American plays Arms Race for 3 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Morocco was increased from 2 to 3.
U.S. Influence in Saudi Arabia was increased from 0 to 2.

He controls SA and there is nothing I can do about it. Also, I think my game was too passive this round. I should have done what I did the next round

AR3:
*** Soviet plays South America Scoring Event ***

* Soviets gain 10 VPs.
* Soviet changes VPs to 4 Soviet Victory Points.

*** American plays Flower Power* Event ***
* +2 USSR VPs for every US "war card" played.
*** American plays Flower Power* for 4 Ops.
*** American initiates realignment in Zaire.
* American roll modifier: +1
* Soviet roll modifier: +1
* U.S. Die = [2] *** <American>
* Soviet Die = [2] *** <American>
* No effect.
* 3 Ops remaining for Realignment.
* U.S. Die = [4] *** <American>
* Soviet Die = [2] *** <American>
* Removing 2 Soviet Influence from Zaire.
* 2 Ops remaining for Realignment.
* U.S. Die = [5] *** <American>
* Soviet Die = [1] *** <American>
* Removing 3 Soviet Influence from Zaire.
* 1 Ops remaining for Realignment.
*** American initiates realignment in Angola.
* American roll modifier: +2
* Soviet roll modifier: +0
* U.S. Die = [6] *** <American>
* Soviet Die = [2] *** <American>
* Removing 2 Soviet Influence from Angola.

Soviet Influence in Zaire was decreased from 5 to 0.
Soviet Influence in Angola was decreased from 2 to 0.

As I said, nothing I could have done for Southern brothers. However... realignments in Africa really compensated it, kicking Krzemyk out of Zair/Angola/SA subregion! The continent is opened for m now.

AR4:
*** Soviet plays Panama Canal Returned* for 1 Ops.

Soviet Influence in Panama was increased from 2 to 3.
*** Soviet plays Panama Canal Returned* Event ***
U.S. Influence in Panama was increased from 0 to 1.
U.S. Influence in Costa Rica was increased from 0 to 1.
U.S. Influence in Venezuela was increased from 0 to 1.

*** American plays Latin American Death Squads for 2 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Zaire was increased from 0 to 1.
U.S. Influence in Nigeria was increased from 2 to 3.

Finally, something in SA/CA! Also, preparing for the reward for Africa

AR5:
*** Soviet plays East European Unrest Event ***

Soviet Influence in Poland was decreased from 4 to 3.
Soviet Influence in E. Germany was decreased from 4 to 3.
Soviet Influence in Finland was decreased from 1 to 0.
*** Soviet plays East European Unrest for 3 Ops.
*** Soviet initiates realignment in Nigeria.
* American roll modifier: +1
* Soviet roll modifier: +0
* U.S. Die = [6] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet Die = [1] *** <Soviet>.
* 2 Ops remaining for Realignment.
* U.S. Die = [5] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet Die = [1] *** <Soviet>
* 1 Ops remaining for Realignment.
* U.S. Die = [3] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet Die = [1] *** <Soviet>
Soviet Influence in Nigeria was decreased from 1 to 0.

*** American plays Africa Scoring Event ***
* U.S. gains 11 VPs.
* American changes VPs to 7 American Victory Points.

Three one's in the row! Again, lucky for me and 11 VP reward.

AR6:
*** Soviet plays Our Man in Tehran* in the Space Race for 2 Ops.

* Soviet Die = [5] *** <Soviet>
* Space Race attempt not successful.

*** American plays OPEC in the Space Race for 3 Ops.
* U.S. Die = [3] *** <American>
* American changes American Space Race to Animal in Space.

Having some time to space monopolized OPEC.

AR7:
*** Soviet plays Kitchen Debates* for 1 Ops.

Soviet Influence in Afghanistan was increased from 2 to 3.

*** American plays U2 Incident* Event ***
* American changes VPs to 6 American Victory Points.
*** American plays U2 Incident* for 3 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Brazil was increased from 0 to 2.

Ok, I decided to give a shot with Brazil so he won't coup me in AR1 in Africa. I would love to keep him out of this continent. Also, please note that De Gaulle is still on his hand! Again, couldn't really coup this turn, I lose two VP and we finish at +4VP's.  Pic:

Turn 5:

My hand:
Portuguese Empire Crumbles
Puppet Governments
Che
Missile envy
Camp David Accords
Voice of America
ABM Treaty
Nuclear Subs
Quagmire

Nice, strong hand! I decided to headline Nuclear Subs and take over SA. I will also Quagmire myself and get rid of Portuguese stuff.

Headline:
*** American plays Nuclear Subs* Event ***

* US Coups do not affect DEFCON this turn.
*** Soviet plays Junta Event ***
Soviet Influence in Mexico was increased from 0 to 2.
*** Soviet initiates coup in Brazil with 2 Ops.
* Soviet Die = [3] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet changes DefCon to 2.
U.S. Influence in Brazil was decreased from 2 to 1.

Junta... Mexico requires some attention now but it does not disturbs my plans a lot.

AR1:
*** Soviet plays Salt Negotiations* Event ***

* Soviet claims Decolonization.
* Soviet changes DefCon to 4.
* All coups attempts this turn have -1 die-roll modifier.

*** American plays Che for 3 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Mexico was increased from 2 to 4.
U.S. Influence in Costa Rica was increased from 1 to 2.
*** American plays Che Event ***
*** Soviet plays Che for 3 Ops.
* Soviet player may attempt a coup against a Non-Battleground Country in S. American, Central America, or Africa.
*** Soviet initiates coup in Costa Rica with 3 Ops.
* Soviet Die = [5] *** <Soviet>
* -1 die-roll modifier (Salt Negotiations).
*** Soviet initiates coup in Morocco with 3 Ops.
* Soviet Die = [6] *** <Soviet>
* -1 die-roll modifier (Salt Negotiations).
U.S. Influence in Morocco was decreased from 3 to 1.
U.S. Influence in Panama was decreased from 2 to 1.

Very smart move from Krzemyk, he leaves option for counter-coups, while still trying to come back to Africa (decol). It also makes my ABM useless.

AR2:
*** Soviet plays Special Relationship for 2 Ops.

Soviet Influence in Brazil was increased from 2 to 4.

*** American plays Missile Envy for 2 Ops.
*** American initiates coup in Venezuela with 2 Ops.
* U.S. Die = [6] *** <American>
* -1 die-roll modifier (Salt Negotiations).
* American changes American Military Ops to 2.
Soviet Influence in Venezuela was decreased from 3 to 0.

Self-explanatory

AR3:
*** Soviet plays Arab-Israeli War for 2 Ops.

Soviet Influence in Venezuela was increased from 0 to 2.

*** American plays Puppet Governments* for 2 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Venezuela was increased from 1 to 3.

It does not seem he has stronger playable card therefore I decide to keep ABM for next turn and wait with quagmairing myself.

AR4:
*** Soviet plays Cultural Revolution* Event ***

* Soviet player gets China Card available for play.

*** American plays Camp David Accords* for 2 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Venezuela was increased from 3 to 4.
U.S. Influence in Costa Rica was increased from 1 to 2.

And there goes China... Meanwhile waiting for Decol (can't play quamire before) I secure my conquest.

AR5:
*** Soviet plays Decolonization Event ***

Soviet Influence in South Africa was increased from 0 to 1.
Soviet Influence in Zaire was increased from 0 to 1.
Soviet Influence in Nigeria was increased from 0 to 1.
Soviet Influence in Algeria was increased from 0 to 1.

*** American plays The Voice of America Event ***
Soviet Influence in Algeria was decreased from 1 to 0.
Soviet Influence in Nigeria was decreased from 1 to 0.
Soviet Influence in Zaire was decreased from 1 to 0.
Soviet Influence in South Africa was decreased from 1 to 0.

Decolonization and De-decolonization. In retrospective... Despite removing all Soviet influence from africa, VoA seems like a waste of a great card. Nevertheless I can't think of any better move now - I would prefer to use 3 OP's from Quagmire couping something.

AR6:
*** Soviet plays Allende* for 1 Ops.

*** Soviet initiates coup in Zaire with 1 Ops.
* Soviet Die = [2] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet changes DefCon to 3.
* No coups or realignments in Asia.
* Soviet Military Ops alread at 5.
* No change in influence in Zaire.

*** American plays Quagmire* for 3 Ops.
*** American initiates coup in Panama with 3 Ops.
* U.S. Die = [5] *** <American>
* -1 die-roll modifier (Salt Negotiations).
* American changes American Military Ops to 5.
Soviet Influence in Panama was decreased from 3 to 0.
*** American plays Quagmire* Event ***

Another lucky roll for me. I must admit, the rolls were with me during this game!

AR7:
*** Soviet plays "Ask Not What Your Country Can Do For You..."* Event ***

US player may decide to discard and draw replacement cards.
* US player does not discard any cards.
*** Soviet plays "Ask Not What Your Country Can Do For You..."* for 3 Ops.
*** Soviet initiates coup in Zaire with 3 Ops.
* Soviet Die = [2] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet changes DefCon to 2.
* -1 die-roll modifier (Salt Negotiations).
* Soviet Military Ops alread at 5.
U.S. Influence in Zaire was decreased from 1 to 0.
Soviet Influence in Zaire was increased from 0 to 1.

* American discards Portuguese Empire Crumbles*
* U.S. Die = [4] *** <American>
* Quagmire* cancelled.

The SALT negotiations were very unfortunate for me... Nevertheless I won Panama and Venezuela for Zaire. I did not manage to keep Krzemyk outside of Africa but what to do when he can do two coups? Now I think I could use ABM and Portuguese for Coups in SA, maybe it would divert his attention from africa. Pic:

Ok, I will try to finish the report tmr.

Nice report. Always eager to read this kind of posts ;)

I think your best headline in T3 was Five years plan. You knew for sure he holds De Gaulle, US/Japan, Asia Scoring and Duck and cover. Discarding any of these cards is awesome and firing the event of US/Japan or Duck and Cover in headline is a plus.

Indo-Pakistan War is also a good headline, but Olympic Games? I once saw one losing a game doing that  ::)

I will write more about the game after the report is finished, right now I'd like to clear one matter: mariano remarked, that I should be more aggresive in Europe. It was my decision to not do so. With his "Marshall Opening" it was pretty hard to get domination because of countries count. My best shot was to avoid his domination there. The goal was accomplished by holding De Gaule over his head so he was afraid to make a move into France. Meanwhile I could spread into other parts of the world and I had high hopes for both Americas. But I shouldn't go too far ahead so let's wait for the rest of the report.

My question is: when you used decol, why didn't you put one of the ip's in Algeria? It's a classic move to gain access to France, and if you are simultaneously holding Degaulle is really hard for the US to stop you. Once you control France you can keep Degaulle in the deck to discourage any attempts to regain control,  virtualy ensuring US will never dominate control (At least until late-war US power cards are released)

I did put one point into Algeria (as you can see in Turn 5 AR 5), but I couldn't follow it up with France, because mariano wiped it all up with The Voice of America.

Welcome back, it is the story time again kids!

Turn 6:

My hand:
We will bury you
ABM treaty
Shuttle Diplomacy
Red Scare/Purge
Brush War
Muslim Revolution
Willy Brandt
Alliance for Progress
Brezhnev Doctrine

30 OPs! Really strong hand, however WWBY will not be playable (and I must admit, I hate giving away 3 easy VP's to Soviets) and playing Muslim Revolutions is discussable. Since I will be probably fighting in Americas, I go with Purge in Soviet Duma.

Headline:
*** American plays Red Scare/Purge Event ***
*** Soviet plays The Cambridge Five Event ***

* US player has no scoring cards.

So he knows I don't have CA/SEA and probably neither he has.

AR1:
*** Soviet plays Cuban Missile Crisis* for 2 Ops.

*** Soviet initiates coup in Nigeria with 2 Ops.
* Soviet Die = [6] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet changes DefCon to 2.
* Soviet changes Soviet Military Ops to 2.
Soviet Influence in Nigeria was increased from 0 to 3.
U.S. Influence in Nigeria was decreased from 3 to 0.

*** American plays Alliance For Progress* for 3 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Panama was increased from 1 to 2.
U.S. Influence in Costa Rica was increased from 2 to 3.
U.S. Influence in Saudi Arabia was increased from 2 to 3.

[/i] Uh. So I won't repeat Control in Africa. Therefore let's try to defend domination and shift the focus to CA [/i]

AR2:
*** Soviet plays Liberation Theology Event ***

* Soviet player may add 3 Influence in Central America - no more than 2 per country.
Soviet Influence in Panama was increased from 0 to 2.
Soviet Influence in Mexico was increased from 2 to 3.

*** American plays Shuttle Diplomacy for 3 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Mexico was increased from 4 to 5.
U.S. Influence in Panama was increased from 2 to 4.

Empty round.

AR3:
*** Soviet plays Bear Trap* in the Space Race for 2 Ops.

* Soviet Die = [1] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet changes Soviet Space Race to Man in Space.
* Soviets gain 2 VPs.
* Soviet changes VPs to 2 American Victory Points.

* Soviet player updated turn to Turn 6, Round 3: American
American player must select target of invasion.
* American selects Brazil as target of Brush War.
* U.S. Die = [2] *** <American>
* American changes American Military Ops to 3.
* Die-roll modifier: 0
* Insurgents defeated in Brazil..

While he successfully sends Comrade Gagarin to Space I decide to acquire an initiative and start an offensive in SA. Despite 66% chances of success in Brazil, my troops got lost in Amazon jungle.

AR4:
*** Soviet plays South African Unrest Event ***

Soviet Influence in South Africa was increased from 0 to 1.
Soviet Influence in Angola was increased from 0 to 2.

*** American plays Willy Brandt* Event ***
* Soviets gain 1 VPs.
* American changes VPs to 1 Soviet Victory Point.
Soviet Influence in W. Germany was increased from 0 to 1.
*** American plays Willy Brandt* for 2 Ops.
U.S. Influence in W. Germany was increased from 4 to 5.
U.S. Influence in South Africa was increased from 3 to 4.

I am impressed how my opponent deals with Red Scare/Purge, his events help him to avoid the penalty. I leave France open since I should easily win the potential bidding war.

AR5:
*** Soviet plays Sadat Expels Soviets* Event ***

* Removing 2 USSR Influence from Egypt.
U.S. Influence in Egypt was increased from 0 to 1.
*** Soviet plays Sadat Expels Soviets* for 1 Ops.
Soviet Influence in Egypt was decreased from 2 to 1.

*** American plays ABM Treaty Event ***
* American changes DefCon to 3.
*** American plays card for 4 Ops.
*** American initiates coup in Nigeria with 4 Ops.
* U.S. Die = [4] *** <American>
* American changes DefCon to 2.
* American changes American Military Ops to 5.
U.S. Influence in Nigeria was increased from 0 to 3.
Soviet Influence in Nigeria was decreased from 3 to 0.

My mistake. I should either use the possibility and secure Put 2 to Egypt, 1 Saudi and 1 Israel to break the domination in ME or attack brazil again. Coup in Nigeria seems like a huge waste of a strong card, I think I was too obsessed with Africa at this moment. I should have been satisfied with simple 3/2 domination.

AR6:
*** Soviet plays De Gaule Leads France* for 2 Ops.

Soviet Influence in Egypt was increased from 1 to 3.

*** American plays "We Will Bury You"* in the Space Race for 4 Ops.
* U.S. Die = [6] *** <American>
* Space Race attempt not successful.

Here my opportunity goes down the Nile river.

AR7:
*** Soviet plays Summit for 1 Ops.
Soviet Influence in France was increased from 0 to 1.

*** American plays Brezhnev Doctrine* for 3 Ops.
U.S. Influence in France was increased from 0 to 3.
*** American plays Brezhnev Doctrine* Event ***
* USSR adds 1 Ops to cards played this turn (to maxmimum of 4).

Very bad turn by me or very good turn by Krzemyk. I had such a powerful hand, but the effect of Red Scare/Purge was minimized (4 OP card took away only two OP's from Krzemyk's cards) Bush Wars did not work out and I pretty much wasted the ABM treaty. Moreover Krzemyk scored 3 VP this turn! The only change is that the french general is gone and soon I will be selling BigMacs in Louvre. VP's at -1, we both got enough Military Operations. PIC:

Turn 7:

My hand:
Nixon Plays the China Card
Defectors
Formosan Resolution
Missile Envy
Our Man in Tehran
Lone Gunman
Muslim Revolution
OAS Founded
INDO-Pakistani war

18 OP's with 4 entrapped in Revolutionary Muslims and Lone Gunman. Yeah, this is what You get when You can't handle powerful hand. Now, I don't fully understand my next move. I played Nixon, probably I did not want bidding war in SEA (he has both CA and SEA scoring cards).

Headline:
*** American plays Nixon Plays the China Card* Event ***

* American player gets China Card unavailable for play.
*** Soviet plays Latin American Death Squads Event ***
* Soviet receives +1 die-roll modifier on Coups in Central and South America; Opponent recieves -1.

AR1:
* Removing 3 American Influence from Panama.

U.S. Influence in Panama was decreased from 4 to 1.

*** American plays Formosan Resolution* for 2 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Panama was increased from 1 to 3.

He consequently decides to not care about Europe and goes for Panama (accordingly to the headline). Despite I got lucky again, I don't have anything strong enough to repair the losses. Maybe I should risk Missile Envy?

AR2:
*** Soviet plays NORAD* Event ***

* US player may add 1 Influence to any country already containing US Influence if DEFCON reduced to 2 and Canada is US controlled.
*** Soviet plays NORAD* for 3 Ops.
Soviet Influence in Panama was increased from 2 to 5.

*** American plays OAS Founded* Event ***
U.S. Influence in Panama was increased from 3 to 5.

Desperate Fight for the channel.

AR3:
*** Soviet plays Central America Scoring Event ***

* Soviets gain 1 VPs.
* Soviet changes VPs to 2 Soviet Victory Points.

*** American plays Missile Envy for 2 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Panama was increased from 5 to 7.

I was quite surprise to see scoring that early, probably he wants to move the focus to SEA now to reduce his losses there. It's not going bad yet! I secured Panama for the future/final scoring.

AR4:
*** Soviet plays Grain Sales to Soviets in the Space Race for 2 Ops.

* Soviet Die = [5] *** <Soviet>
* Space Race attempt not successful.

*** American plays Defectors for 2 Ops.
U.S. Influence in France was increased from 3 to 4.
U.S. Influence in Spain/Portugal was increased from 1 to 2.

Uncontrolled France was simply to disturbing for me, I did not want to miss scoring next Turn. Spain/Portugal is an obvious waste of IP, it should be placed in Saudi Arabia (always, 1 point for BG) or Laos/Cambodia.

AR5:
*** Soviet plays How I Learned to Stop Worrying* for 2 Ops.

Soviet Influence in Poland was increased from 3 to 4.
Soviet Influence in E. Germany was increased from 3 to 4.

*** American plays Muslim Revolution in the Space Race for 4 Ops.
* U.S. Die = [3] *** <American>
* American changes American Space Race to Man in Space.

I think Krzemyk finally realized how bad it looks in Europe. Especially Karol Wojtyla alias John-Paul II could not have been sent to space in grain-filled Sojuz and he is about to pilgrim to People's Republic of Poland. I simply get rid of annoying card.

AR6:
*** Soviet plays SouthEast Asia Scoring* Event ***

* Soviet changes VPs to 4 American Victory Points.

*** American plays Our Man in Tehran* Event ***
* US player discards the following cards:
De Gaule Leads France*
Arab-Israeli War

Easy points for me, meanwhile just getting rid of some cards, awaiting the Late War Period.

AR7:
*** Soviet plays John Paul II Elected Pope* Event ***

* Removing 2 USSR Influence from Poland.
* Adding 1 US Influence in Poland.
*** Soviet plays John Paul II Elected Pope* for 2 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Poland was increased from 0 to 1.

*** American plays Indo-Pakistani War Event ***
* India invades Pakistan
* U.S. Die = [5] *** <American>
* American changes American Military Ops to 2.
* USSR receives +2 VPs (Flower Power).
* Soviets gain 2 VPs.
* American changes VPs to 2 American Victory Points.

Again, my mistake! I played the war for military operations to avoid the loss of the points but I forgot about Flower Power. I should have played for 2 OP's and maybe try realignment in Zaire (and Angola?). Aggressive game, damn it! At least I was able to defend CA with pretty bad hand (despite that opponents with Pope and Grain sales was not better). Pic:

Turn 8:

My hand:
Nuclear Test Ban
Cuban Missile Crisis
Che
Aldrich Ames Remix
Shuttle Diplomacy
Lone Gunman
OPEC
Red Scare/Purge
Wargames

Again, pretty strong hand! The wargames card seems pretty interesting (VP at +4) however I don't have any immediate source of points. Aldrich will serve to get rid of Gunman at AR7, OPEC to space, and the rest of cards seem playable. I decided to give another shot and use Red Scare/Purge again.

Headline:
*** American plays Red Scare/Purge Event ***

* All cards played by U.S.S.R. this turn are -1 Ops (min. 1 Op).
*** Soviet plays Liberation Theology Event ***
Soviet Influence in Panama was increased from 5 to 7.
Soviet Influence in Mexico was increased from 3 to 4.

The same situation, I play Purge, he goes around with the event. Fight over CA again?

AR1:
*** Soviet plays Alliance For Progress* Event ***

* U.S. gains 1 VPs.
* Soviet changes VPs to 3 American Victory Points.
*** Soviet initiates coup in Angola with 2 Ops.
* Soviet Die = [5] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet changes DefCon to 2.
* Soviet changes Soviet Military Ops to 2.
* Removing 3 American Influence from Angola.
Soviet Influence in Angola was increased from 2 to 4.
U.S. Influence in Angola was decreased from 3 to 0.
U.S. Influence in Mexico was increased from 5 to 6.

*** American plays Nuclear Test Ban for 4 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Panama was increased from 7 to 9.
U.S. Influence in Morocco was increased from 1 to 3.

Really smart play by Krzemyk. I received only 1 VP from my OPEC and lost Angola in quite a good Coup. I am securing domination in Africa and CA.

AR2:
*** Soviet plays Arms Race Event ***

* Soviet has more Military Ops AND has met the Required Military Ops for 3 Vps.
* Soviets gain 3 VPs.
* Soviet changes VPs to 0 Victory Points.

*** American plays Cuban Missile Crisis* for 3 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Saudi Arabia was increased from 3 to 4.
U.S. Influence in Israel was increased from 1 to 3.

He gets easy 3 points while I keep my passive game. Definitely I should have tried realignment in Brazil/Venezuela this turn.

AR3:
*** Soviet plays Middle East Scoring Event ***

* U.S.S.R. has Domination in Middle East for 5 VPs.
* Soviets gain 5 VPs.
* Soviet changes VPs to 5 Soviet Victory Points.

*** American plays OPEC in the Space Race for 3 Ops.
* U.S. Die = [3] *** <American>
* American changes American Space Race to Man in Earth Orbit.

Ok, Wargames just became a 4 OP's card.

AR4:
*** Soviet plays Tear Down This Wall* in the Space Race for 2 Ops.

* Soviet Die = [1] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet changes Soviet Space Race to Man in Earth Orbit.

*** American plays Wargames* for 4 Ops.
*** American initiates realignment in Angola.
* American roll modifier: +1
* Soviet roll modifier: +2
* U.S. Die = [3] *** <American>
* Soviet Die = [3] *** <American>
* Already zero American influence in Angola.
* 3 Ops remaining for Realignment.
* U.S. Die = [1] *** <American>
* Soviet Die = [3] *** <American>
* Already zero American influence in Angola.
* 2 Ops remaining for Realignment.
* U.S. Die = [4] *** <American>
* Soviet Die = [5] *** <American>
* Already zero American influence in Angola.
* 1 Ops remaining for Realignment.
* U.S. Die = [6] *** <American>
* Soviet Die = [6] *** <American>
* 0 Ops remaining for Realignment.

Now the dices are on Krzemyk's side. I still think I should attack in SA instead of Africa.

AR5:
*** Soviet plays Allende* for 1 Ops.

Soviet Influence in Poland was increased from 4 to 5.

*** American plays Che Event ***
*** Soviet plays Che for 3 Ops.
*** Soviet initiates coup in Costa Rica with 3 Ops.
* Soviet Die = [4] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet changes Soviet Military Ops to 5.
* Removing 1 American Influence from Costa Rica.
*** Soviet initiates coup in Morocco with 3 Ops.
*** Soviet plays Che for 3 Ops.
* Soviet Die = [6] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet Military Ops alread at 5.
* Removing 3 American Influence from Morocco.
*** American plays Che for 3 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Morocco was decreased from 3 to 0.
U.S. Influence in Botswana was increased from 0 to 2.
U.S. Influence in Costa Rica was increased from 2 to 3.

I should have seen Mr. Walesa coming, meanwhile I changed a safe 3-stability country for 2-stability vulnerable one.

AR6:
*** Soviet plays Solidarity* Event ***

U.S. Influence in Poland was increased from 1 to 4.
*** Soviet plays Solidarity* for 1 Ops.
Soviet Influence in Poland was increased from 5 to 6.

*** American plays Shuttle Diplomacy for 3 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Poland was increased from 4 to 7.

I could not have missed such an opportunity! Let's liberate Poland!

AR7:
*** Soviet plays Pershing II Deployed* Event ***

* Soviet changes VPs to 6 Soviet Victory Points.
U.S. Influence in Canada was decreased from 4 to 3.
U.S. Influence in W. Germany was decreased from 5 to 4.
U.S. Influence in France was decreased from 4 to 3.

*** American plays Aldrich Ames Remix* for 3 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Poland was increased from 7 to 9.
U.S. Influence in France was increased from 3 to 4.
*** American plays Aldrich Ames Remix* Event ***
* "Lone Gunman"* is discarded.

I secured Poland and finally got rid of Gunman. It is good finish of this turn. Despite I did not collect any VP's (Krzemyk does not have any non-battleground country!) and I finish at -8 VP, I have domination in CA, Africa, Europe, SEA and Asia, draw in SA and bad situation in ME. The future seems bright! PIC:

Turn 9:

My hand:
Kithen Debates
Iran-Contra Scandal
Marine Barracks Bombing
South America Scoring
Star Wars
Duck and Cover
Brush War
Cam David Accords
The Reformer

Nice hand. I should probably score SA as soon as I can, since Krzemyk does not have domination there. The reformer goes into space, risking Duck and Cover as a headline followed by brush wars.

Headline:
*** American plays Duck and Cover Event ***
* American changes DefCon to 2.
* American changes VPs to 5 Soviet Victory Points.
*** Soviet plays Portuguese Empire Crumbles* Event ***
Soviet Influence in SE African States was increased from 0 to 2.
Soviet Influence in Angola was increased from 4 to 6.

Africa Scoring? Better to pay some attention what is happening there. D&C gave some protection there.

AR1:
*** Soviet plays AWACS Sale to Saudis* Event ***

U.S. Influence in Saudi Arabia was increased from 4 to 6.
*** Soviet plays AWACS Sale to Saudis* for 3 Ops.
Soviet Influence in W. Germany was increased from 1 to 4.

*** American plays The China Card for 4 Ops.
U.S. Influence in W. Germany was increased from 4 to 8.

Just to close the topic of domination over Europe.

AR2:
*** Soviet plays Truman Doctrine* Event ***

Soviet Influence in Austria was decreased from 1 to 0.
*** Soviet plays Truman Doctrine* for 1 Ops.
*** Soviet initiates realignment in Nigeria.
* American roll modifier: +1
* Soviet roll modifier: +0
* U.S. Die = [4] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet Die = [2] *** <Soviet>
* 0 Ops remaining for Realignment.

*** American plays Brush War Event **
* American selects Brazil as target of Brush War.
* U.S. Die = [1] *** <American>
* American changes American Military Ops to 3.
* Die-roll modifier: 0
* Insurgents defeated in Brazil..
* USSR receives +2 VPs (Flower Power).
* American changes VPs to 7 Soviet Victory Points.

Again, waste of 2 VP's!

AR3:
*** Soviet plays Ussuri River Skirmish* in the Space Race for 3 Ops.

* Soviet Die = [4] *** <Soviet>
* Space Race attempt not successful.

*** American plays South America Scoring Event ***

* Soviets gain 2 VPs.
* American changes VPs to 9 Soviet Victory Points.

I cannot wait any longer to score this region.

AR4:
*** Soviet plays The Cambridge Five for 2 Ops.

Soviet Influence in Uruguay was increased from 0 to 2.

*** American plays The Reformer* in the Space Race for 3 Ops.
* U.S. Die = [6] *** <American>
* Space Race attempt not successful.

Krzemyk was late with taking Uruguay. Now it does not change anything so I use my action to space Mr. Gorbachev to space and use star wars later. Unsuccessfully.

AR5:
*** Soviet plays "An Evil Empire"* Event ***
* Soviet changes VPs to 8 Soviet Victory Points.
*** Soviet plays "An Evil Empire"* for 3 Ops.

*** Soviet initiates coup in Botswana with 3 Ops.
* Soviet Die = [4] *** <Soviet>
U.S. Influence in Botswana was decreased from 2 to 0.
Soviet Influence in Botswana was increased from 0 to 1.

*** American plays Star Wars* for 2 Ops.
*** American initiates coup in Botswana with 2 Ops.
* U.S. Die = [6] *** <American>
U.S. Influence in Botswana was increased from 0 to 3.
Soviet Influence in Botswana was decreased from 1 to 0.

Defending my lands. The situation in the world still guarantees me victory in final scoring.

AR6:
*** Soviet plays Reagan Bombs Libya* Event ***

* Soviet changes VPs to 7 Soviet Victory Points.
*** Soviet plays Reagan Bombs Libya* for 2 Ops.
*** Soviet initiates realignment in Nigeria.
* American roll modifier: +1
* Soviet roll modifier: +0
* U.S. Die = [3] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet Die = [3] *** <Soviet>
* 1 Ops remaining for Realignment.
*** Soviet initiates realignment in Nigeria.
* U.S. Die = [4] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet Die = [4] *** <Soviet>
* Already zero Soviet influence in Nigeria.
* 0 Ops remaining for Realignment.

*** American plays Kitchen Debates* Event ***
* U.S. gains 2 VPs.
* American changes VPs to 5 Soviet Victory Points.
* US player may poke Soviet player in the chest.

Easy 3 VP's with little help of the dices. Life's good so far.

AR7:
*** Soviet plays Iran-Iraq War* for 2 Ops.

*** Soviet initiates coup in Botswana with 2 Ops.
* Soviet Die = [5] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet changes Soviet Military Ops to 5.
U.S. Influence in Botswana was decreased from 3 to 0.

*** American plays Iran-Contra Scandal* for 2 Ops.
*** American initiates coup in SE African States with 2 Ops.
* U.S. Die = [2] *** <American>
* American Military Ops alread at 5.
Soviet Influence in SE African States was decreased from 2 to 0.
*** American plays Iran-Contra Scandal* Event ***
* US Realigments have -1 die-roll modifier this turn.

I needed to coup African states. If I simply went back to Bostwana, Coup in Nigeria in AR1 would give domination to my opponent. We both have military operations, the VP is at -5. Life is good so far. Time for the final round! Pic:

Turn 10:

My hand:
Chernobyl
We will bury You
Yuri and Samantha
Socialist Governments
East European Unrests
Europe Scoring
Glasnost
Marine Barracks Bombing
Camp David Accords

Hand one in million! I think everybody sees what's coming here...

Headline
*** American plays Chernobyl* Event ***

US player choose one region.
* USSR may not add Influence to Europe by play of Ops.
*** Soviet plays Latin American Dept Crisis Event ***
American player must discard a '3' or more card or USSR may double influence in 2 South American countries.
* American discards "We Will Bury You"*

(...) a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Ukrainian SSR (...)

AR1:
*** Soviet plays North Sea Oil* Event ***
* US may play 8 cards this turn.
* OPEC no longer playable.
*** Soviet plays North Sea Oil* for 3 Ops.
*** Soviet initiates coup in Nigeria with 3 Ops.
* Soviet Die = [4] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet changes DefCon to 2.
* Soviet changes Soviet Military Ops to 3.
Soviet Influence in Nigeria was increased from 0 to 2.
U.S. Influence in Nigeria was decreased from 3 to 0.

*** American plays East European Unrest Event ***
Soviet Influence in W. Germany was decreased from 4 to 2.
Soviet Influence in Poland was decreased from 6 to 4.
Soviet Influence in E. Germany was decreased from 4 to 2.

"In February 1988, the government hiked food prices by 40%. On April 21, a new wave of strikes hit the country. On May 2, workers at the Gdańsk Shipyard went on strike. That strike was broken by the government between May 5 and May 10, but only temporarily: on August 15, a new strike took place at the "July Manifesto" mine in Jastrzębie Zdrój. By August 20 the strike had spread to many other mines, and on August 22 the Gdańsk Shipyard joined the strike. (...)" (quote from wikipedia - history of solidarity). Europe rumbles... the last bastion of USSR is about to fall. Meanwhile Comrade Krzemyk makes a desperate run for Africa, however 15 VP's seems like a safe limit.

AR2:
*** Soviet plays ABM Treaty Event ***

* Soviet changes DefCon to 3.
*** Soviet initiates coup in Algeria with 4 Ops.
*** Soviet plays card for 4 Ops.
* Soviet Die = [5] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet changes Soviet Military Ops to 5.
Soviet Influence in Algeria was increased from 0 to 3.
U.S. Influence in Algeria was decreased from 2 to 0.

*** American plays Glasnost* for 4 Ops.
U.S. Influence in E. Germany was increased from 0 to 4.
*** American plays Glasnost* Event ***
* American changes VPs to 7 Soviet Victory Points.
* American changes DefCon to 3.

Increased openness and transparency in Soviet institutions and activities gave Comrade one more shot in Africa. However I had no other high OP card to play at this moment.

AR3:
*** Soviet plays The China Card for 4 Ops.

*** Soviet initiates coup in South Africa with 4 Ops.
* Soviet Die = [1] *** <Soviet>
* No change in influence in South Africa.

*** American plays Yuri and Samantha* for 2 Ops.
U.S. Influence in E. Germany was increased from 4 to 6.
*** American plays Yuri and Samantha* Event ***
* USSR receives 1 VP for every US coup attempt this turn.

My brave marines defended South Africa. However this Coup were from pure desperation - it would require 6 just to remove my influence from the country.

AR4:
*** Soviet plays Five Year Plan in the Space Race for 3 Ops.

* Soviet Die = [2] *** <Soviet>
* Soviet changes Soviet Space Race to Lunar Orbit.
* Soviet changes VPs to 10 Soviet Victory Points.

* Soviet player updated turn to Turn 10, Round 4: American
*** American plays Europe Scoring Event ***
* U.S. has Control of Europe.

Final situation on the board:

It was very static game. For the most of the game we were defending in battleground mid-war regions while the situation in early-war regions was locked down pretty early. This made the game pretty static, with occasional coups and lacking thrilling realignments. On the other hand I was not forced to more aggressive play with good situation in 5 of 7 regions. I definitely missed the occasion to gain 3 battlegrounds in ME right after my opponent played Sadat, but I needed to analyze the game to see my mistakes.
I must admit that I learned a lot from my first game report and I will use this knowledge for future games. I am looking forward to comments!

1. His hand in the last turn was simply unbelievable. After Chernobyl I knew what's going on, but simply didn't have any card to defend Europe. I counted that he didn't have Europe Scoring in his hand and that I could manage somehow to get VP's to 9 (went pretty well) and score control in Africa (I had the scoring card on my hand). Unfortunatelly I had also Asia Scoring which was unplayable and cut down my hand size.

2. In turn 6 I got pretty lucky. I had several quite good events that allowed me to defend against Red Scare. Just to be clear: I did'nt want to use all this events at the beginning of this turn.

3. In T8 AR 6 I simply forgot that I'm under Red Scare (again!) and thought that after Mr Walesa I have 2 OPs to repair damage. I had only one and that robbed me from precious time in the last turn (he already had control of Poland). I should use Pershong deployment to secure my position in Poland first.

4. I don't remember what I had in my hand that forced me to finally play De Gaulle in T6 AR6. I think it was something unplayable and I decided I don't want to play China Card (and for only 3 OPs under Red Scare) and be forced to play De Gaule in Turn 7, when he cannot come back. Unfortunatelly I had to play Iranian Shah next turn, who robbed me of the General.

Too late, obviously. Had you played it in your first oportunity things might have worked quite differently for you ;)

I got the impression that he was holding VoA for this specific reason, but I could be wrong.

Damn, I didn't cach it at this time! It is one of the problems on Vassal, you can add and subtract IPs at will. But I think it wouldn't matter in the final outcome.

You're right Riku, we have missed that. At least it did not have any influence on the game at all.

Chimista- Krzemyk could have moved some influence to Algieria during Destal in the second turn (however Nigeria and Angola are more rational by this time) but the Decol was unavailable for him. I played it with UN in thr 3rd turn and then, when he SALT-ed it later, I kept VoA to immediately remove his influence after him playing Decol.

I was talking about the second turn: then he should have placed one ip in Algeria. What do you mean with "Nigeria and Angola are more rational by this time"? I don't agree at all. Placing one ip in Algeria is more effective for whatever goal you consider:

1 - It gives you access to France, as metioned, so it can be the key to Europe.
2 - You have a better board position in Africa this way: with a further 2ip you'll control 3bg countries. If you want to control Nigeria too you can play simultaneously into Cameroon and Saharan States so US can do virtually nothing to deny you access to Nigeria.

So playing Algeria in  is a better move than playing in Nigeria, unless US Already has presence in France and can counter you puting 3 ips in Algeria. Even in that case I think I would still play in Algeria. Any thoughts?

AR6:
*** Soviet plays CIA Created* for 1 Ops.

Soviet Influence in India was increased from 0 to 1.
*** Soviet plays CIA Created* Event ***
* Soviet Hand is revealed.
*** American plays card for 1 Ops.
U.S. Influence in Thailand was increased from 2 to 3.

Did you have a gentlemen's agreement not to coup in a battleground and end the game with a nuclear war on USSR's turn?

When it comes to a nuclear war, there is no gentleman's agreement, nevertheless the putative coup target did not exist in the 1st turn.

I can't answer for the opponent but here is my view on his situation:

In general I agree, Algeria is more stable and gives better strategic position in Africa/Europe regions.
However in this peculiar situation, moving into Algeria would meet with my immediate reaction towards France what might have ended in bidding war (if at all) which would be lost by him (I was under the influence of containment, he could only suspect i have suez). He would also need to spare some ops to secure the battleground in the next round and, as was mentioned, he was more interested in keeping me in check in Europe (Europe scoring did not show up yet and threatening me worked quite well) than actually fighting for it.

That's why I got rid of this card when it wasn't DEFCON suicide for me. As USSR i coup Panama and play Fidel only when I know where CIA is or there is already Mid War.

Outstanding - I didn't look at the board to notice that.
