what does "free coup" means?

a) "free coup attempt" is affected by defcon restriction.
b) "free coup attempt" affect defcon status.

It means that if u coup battleground Defcon is lowered. If u do that at defcon 2 u lose. If u let ur opponent do that at Defcon 2  eg by playing Ortega or Tear Down This Wall u also lose (with the exception of nuclear submarines being active).

However free coup doesnt give u military ops.

"Free" also means that DEFCON geographical restrictions do not apply. However, event text restrictions do apply and are usually more restrictive than DEFCON geographical restrictions. "Tear Down This Wall" offers the only free coup that is an exception from the rule.

Also note that other events still affect the coups outcomes, e.g.:
a) if you're under Cuban Missile Crisis and you perform a free coup, you lose
b) if Nuclear Subs is active, free US battleground coup does not affect DEFCON
c) RS/P, Brezhnev, and Containment affect the card value for the coup
d) SALT and Latin American Death Squads affect the roll value for the coup

However free coup doesnt give u military ops.

Hmm, new user here and first post. So a free coup does not count towards Military Ops? I didn't know that
