how to play the T1 hand from hell

USSR, optional cards in, no extra IPs.

Europe Scoring, Middle East Scoring
Nasser, CIA Created, UN Intervention
Arab Israeli War, Fidel
Socialist Governments

So this hand is worth 10 IPs. I ended up headlining Arab-Israeli War just to try to get the Middle East locked up. My coup in Iran failed with a terrible roll from Fidel (66% chance to take over the Middle East). Probably should have used Socialist Governments... but I thought I needed a good roll to make up for this hand anyway.

I considered headlining Socialist Government then AR1 Europe Scoring for +9 VP. (No presence for America).

I'd love to hear alternate scenarios. For the record, my opponent played all 3-4 ops cards that turn. :)

Leave West Germany empty, overprotect Italy and go to Mediterranean 2-stability non-battlegrounds. This is setup.
Headline Middle East Scoring, Nasser in your hand secures 0 for you. Play Europe Scoring ASAP. Nasser, Fidel, and Arab-Israeli War go for events, CIA goes for Ops, Soc Govs goes for Ops with UN Intervention, preferably as the AR6 play.

In the turn jump to Indonesia ASAP to provoke coups. When you have a very weak hand (low ops or purged), coups in 1-stability countries are your best bet. At worst you exchange your cheap card to your opponent's expensive one which will be used to overprotect Indonesia, oh well. Anyway, you still have Lebanon as the second target of the same kind of play.

You'll probably lose Asia and have a little worse position in Middle East and Europe but you may count on the scorings that they won't come again until your Mid War events make things better for you.

leave WGER empty? He is the USSR so I guess WGER will be empty ;-)

How is Socialist Governments removing presence from Europe on Turn1? Is the USA player setting up with only 4 WGER/3FRA ????? why?

Yeah, I was USSR... also I talk about headlining Arab-Israeli War which seems like a poor decision if I'm America! :)

I'm slightly fuzzy now but the USA player set up 4 West Germany, 2 Italy, 1 Canada because he had NORAD and Special Relationship, I think.

With a hand this poor, best play would be to try to avoid making Asia an issue until next turn. To prevent DEFCON from falling to 3 or lower, you probably don't want to go into the Middle East.

You won't have domination in Europe since you won't have a non-battleground, so I don't actually like headlining Socialist Governments.

My suggestion is:
Headline Europe Scoring at 0.
Coup Iran with Fidel. Best possible roll is a 3, wiping out all influence (Yes, better than rolling a 6).
Don't coup at all unless the US player drops DEFCON to 3, or if he moves into Pakistan. If he moves into Pakistan, coup with the China Card.
Try to play all cards in your hand for the OPS. Use the China Card to coup in Asia if necessary. Hold UN Intervention, and Nasser if you play the China Card. Don't play Nasser for the event. Try to play CIA Created on your last AR.
