A USA early war auto victory

This is a game i played a week or so ago as the US where I won in the early war with 20 vp.  Game is played with the ITSL default rules (Optional cards and +1 bid to the US)  This is a very rare occurrence so i thought it would be interesting to post. I dont have my hands written down so it will just be action round by action round what happened.  I will try to do a game where i keep track of my cards sometime soon.  I always enjoy reading these so feels like its time to give back.

I really enjoy these posts, even better is that the opponent was me  :-[

I will briefly describe my thought process as I remember this game well (for the same reason it was posted – a Turn 3 US VP victory!)

Turn 1:  Cards in Hand: Cambridge 5, Nuclear Test Ban, Independent Reds, Fidel, CIA Created, UN Intervention and Defectors.

Turn 1 USSR Headline: Cambridge 5 as a relatively neutral event.  Did not headline Vietnam revolts as was hoping for coup win in Iran and did not want to give an easy path in Asia for opponent.  Planned to play CIA before Fidel or Fidel for ops then CIA.  Original plan not to play China card and hold Defectors through to turn 3.
Turn 1 AR1:  Nuclear Test Ban.  Failed coup of Iran, rolling a 1.  With US control of Afghan and Iran I felt devastated at this point (as my hand was all 1 and 2 ops).  This was my first learning point from this game.  Don’t get rattled by a disastrous coup when losing my only decent ops card.
Turn 1 AR2: Vietnam Revolts.  This was a play to try and save Asia as I did not think I would get another opportunity to play VR without losing tempo by reducing defcon to 3 with no gain (as I had only 1 and 2 op cards remaining).  I felt with China card and VR in play I had a good chance to win a coup war in SE Asian as long as he didn’t empty the country (1 in 6 chance)..  My hope was to grab the two Korean and Thailand BG’s to at least be neutral in Asia.
Turn 1 AR3: Independent Reds, using ops into Thailand and Laos/Cambodia.  I got lucky not being kicked out of Vietnam, although would have couped back if there was US influence there.  This was my first major gamble.  I deliberately played into Thailand because I was rattled with the opening coup loss and my low op hand.  In hindsight I think this was a poor play and perhaps I should have lowered defcon to 3 as I had influence in Vietnam.
Turn 1 AR4: China card to secure South Korea and move toward India and hope to get the 3 BG’s.  Perhaps another bad play using the China card but seemed the only way to get SK and have a hope of India.
Turn 1 AR5: Fidel.  Needed the ops and could not play event as wanted to eliminate CIA from game next play.  Made a play for India with 2 ops.
Turn 1 AR6: CIA created to remove from game.  Was thinking long term on this play, but in hindsight I think I could have kept this card to force a defcon play on US AR6, else risk me couping Thailand on Turn 2 ?

Turn 2: I had Arab Israeli War, Eastern European Unrest, Suez Crisis, Formosan, Marshall, UN Intervention, Defectors, Containment

Turn 2 USSR Headline: AIW – had no good card to play, perhaps could have played Defectors in hindsight to save a VP but was hoping I could keep this card through to turn 3 reshuffle.
Turn 2 AR1: EEU.  Tried to grab some European countries before having to play MP and also wanted to protect against Indo-Pakistani War. Should have I couped?
Turn 2 AR2: Suez.  Wanted to resolve France and Turkey before playing MP, so felt I had to use my only 3 ops card but in hindsight this was a mistake.  It was at this point I realised my opponent was simply too good for me when he had the foresight to take Spain on his AR1 followed by playing De-Gaule on AR2 and (effectively) taking France.
Turn 2 AR3: Formosan to try and defend France.  Big mistake on two fronts, firstly no chance of keeping France and secondly I did not realise at the time that Formosan would have given him Asia domination.  Perhaps in hindsight I should have played a two ops card on AR2 into Europe and used Suez to take Taiwan in AR3.
Turn 2 AR4: MP cancelled with UN intervention.  Wanted to ensure I got the 2VP for the coup rather than my opponent.  Again in hindsight perhaps I should have settled for a low ops coup for the VP and used MP/UN for ops later in turn ?
Turn 2 AR5: Defectors as could no longer hold it after playing UN.  Shoring up Turkey and figured I should at least try and get ME, with Asia and Europe down.  Nothing special about this play.
Turn 2 AR6: Containment.  Another event I am glad to see gone.  Shored up NK to seed the stones for a future tied Asia (wish I had never played Formosan now) and influence to Iraq to play for ME.

Turn 3 I had to pray he did not have Asia or Europe and I drew ME, just to take the game another turn.  Needless to say I lost to the better player.

The key learning points for me in this game were that I should not have ‘lost my head’ and taken a huge gamble on my opponent failing a coup (in Thailand) and I should have paid more attention to trying to not get dominated in regions that were likely to score.
In particular I also under-estimated Formosan Resolution.  Still would have lost but at least could have made a game of it  :P

@ BillW:

By no means am I a great player, and I really only play as the USA.  But from what I have seen when playing as the USSR, you really have to keep on attacking with coups.  Once the USA seizes the initiative (which is HUGE in TS), it requires a great USSR hand to get it back.  I think your main mistake was not being the aggressor which is what you have to be as the USSR player.
