Short Game for Introduction

Tomorrow I am going to teach Twilight Struggle to a friend. He is something of a Marxist, and I am sure that he will want to play as the USSR. However, we will not have very long for teaching and playing.

What are my options for short-game variant that is newbie friendly?

Can we call the game at the end of the Early War? How can we adjust/evaluate the score?

Is there something I can do with the Mid War for a quick and dirty variant? Maybe non-starred Early War cards + Mid War and some optional influence placement at the game start?

The Late War scenario has too much going on at the beginning of the game for teaching...

Thoughts?

If you're comfortable losing (I'm guessing you are) then ending the game after a final scoring in turn 5 might be good. Then you get to play the Early cards, he gets a taste of things to come, but will probably not get run over by Midwar cards.
I would end it in turn 5.

I had success with an Early War only game.  I didn't worry about final scoring, we just called it after turn 3.  As it's his first game and you're experienced he's not likely to win anyway, but the Early War will give him a feel for the game for when you play next time.

I taught my roommate the other night. We played the early war with our hands face up. I let him make moves and then told him what I would have done differently. Or why what he did was not the best play. It gave him a good feel for the rules as well as a look at some strategic aspects.

Unfortunately, my friend became busy at the last minute and we were unable to play on Thursday. However, we do plan to get together soon, and now I have some great options thanks to everybody here. Since we might have more time this time though, we will probably just play a full game.
